My essay:
It is strongly suggested that nowadays an automobile, a television and a refrigerator are the wants of all individuals. While this phenomenon brings about certain merits, I believe that the benefits of this desire are meager in comparison with its drawbacks.
On the one hand, the aforementioned development certainly provide people with a number of advantages. The most considerable benefit of this phenomenon is that these items of fundamental needs can hopefully make life more livable. They can provide people with a convenient mode of transport, an unlimited access to a wealth of knowledge and a safe storage of food. Moreover, the increasing demand for these products can encourage companies and individuals including scientists to innovate more high-tech and sophisticated products. As a result, economic growth as well as technological development can be bolstered considerably, which is conducive to citizens' higher living standards.
On the other hand, I believe that the upside of the phenomenon outlined above is eclipsed by its downside. The key rationale in favor of this view is the negative impacts that people's needs of those personal possessions exert on the environment. The increasing call for those items means that more material and more energy are utilized to produce them, which can be a precursor to the exhaustion of fuel as well as other mineral resources. In addition to the depletion of natural resources, the purity of the global world can also be adversely affected. The reason behind this is that nowadays in this thrown-away society, products are often gotten rid of after a short period of time. As a result, people's evergrowing needs for those possessions may ramp up the amount of rubbish being directly discharged to the environment. These trash is mostly hard to dissolve, which may produce detrimental effects on the environment.
In conclusion, despite all the merits that people's tendency of wanting a TV, a car and a fridge can have, I would argue that the disadvantages are of greater significance comparing with the advantages.
