The Vampire's Sweetheart

Chapter Two

───────────────────────────────────

As I stood up from where I was kneeling down, the girl's eyes never left mine as she followed every move I made. Why was she looking at me like that? Why did she call me Hunter? I scrunched up my eyebrows in confusion, before stepping back a little as I looked her over. She was not much taller than me, probably had me beat by a couple inches. Her skin was pale, and her face was peppered with light freckles. Her eyes, which were narrowed at me with anticipation and alarm dancing in them, were a soft green.

I cradled the clothes in my arms once again, keeping them stuffed underneath my chin so I could keep the girl in my vision. Her hands were clinched tightly together, as she took a wide step backwards, spreading her legs apart as if she was preparing herself for a battle. Confusion filled my brain; why was she acting like this?

"Why haven't you tried to kill me, Hunter?" My jaw nearly dropped when the words were spat from her lips. I readjusted the clothes from under my chin, moving them to the crook of my arm as I stared at the girl in disbelief. Kill her? I don't even know her! I shifted on my feet, as her eyes seem to darken with anger.

"Um.. probably because I do not know you, and I am not a murderer?" This only apparently made her angrier, as she growled at me. I flinched from where I was standing, taking notice of her eyes which had changed to a deep red. I stumbled backwards desperately trying to get away from the girl-creature.

"All your kind does is murder!" She snarled, before lunging at me unexpectedly. A weak scream escaped my lips, as I covered my face with my arms awaiting her attack. My eyes widened in surprise and fear, when I heard a little whimper of pain. I peeked out from behind my arms to see Xilo standing there, with one of his hands wrapped tightly around the girl's throat.

"Shouldn't have done that, princess." His voice was dark and deep, full of disgust and anger as his grip on her neck grew tighter. My heart began to beat wildly in my chest, and I sprung from where I was standing to pull his arm away from her. He wouldn't budge, and the girl's eyes lazily looked in my direction; filled with confusion and curiosity.

"Xilo, leave her be!" I begged. I had no idea why I was trying to save this girl's life, when just moments ago she was planning on ending mine. Something inside of me just did feel okay with letting this girl die-- especially not in front of me. Xilo turned towards me before shoving me away roughly.

"Ms. Valentina, stand down." The girl's eyes widened immediately upon hearing my last name, and she began to move frantically trying even harder to get out of his grip. Why did hearing my last name affect her so much? Maybe, she has some sort of issue with my dad? Xilo began to struggle keeping her still, and in a swift motion he brought his other hand up to her neck, and twisted sharply. A cracking noise filled my ears, and my eyes unknowingly began to water.
