When I got home I felt like my feet were dragging. I opened the door and the smell of burnt cookies was thick in the air. I quickly made my way to the kitchen just as Aunt Alina and my mom were fanning away the smoke coming from the oven. Freya was at the table trying to hold in her laughter.

"Please tell me you guys aren't trying to burn the house down." I said.

Everyone turned to look at me. I probably should have looked in the mirror before walking in on everyone. I looked down at myself when I saw the weird looks they were giving me. I was covered in dirt.

"What the hell happened to you?" Freya was the first to ask.

"I tripped and fell." I shrugged. "So, who was trying to burn the house down?"

"Actually, we sort of forgot we had placed the cookies in the oven." Aunt Alina said. "I guess we got carried away."

Carried away? I looked at the counter and there are herb scattered along with what looks to be oils. My mom laughed nervously and started picking everything up. I wondered for a moment if they were trying to do a spell. Is that what it takes to make a proper one? I had already practiced magic, but I still didn't know a lot.

"How was your time with Stella?" My mom asked as a form of distracted. "That's a pretty box. Where did you get it from?"

"Yeah, we were going through some of her stuff and I thought it was pretty cool so she gave it to me." I shrugged. "I'm pretty tired so I'm going to head to bed. Try not to forget anything else that might burn the house down." I walked out before they could say anything else.

I closed the door and lock it behind me once I got inside my room. I expected Kane to be waiting for me, but he's not. I took the opportunity that he isn't here to shower and change. I took my time thinking that he will be lounging in my bed once I walk back in my room, but I'm disappointed again.

A few minutes passed by while I tried to figure out what to do with the stone. I couldn't have my mom snooping around my room and finding it. What if she tried to figure out what it was? I didn't want to leave it out of my sight either.

I went through my drawers to find my shoe box with my jewelry and accessories. I dumped its contents into the box and dug around to try to find something useful. I found an old necklace I tried to make with wire and beads. It was a lame attempt to make my own jewelry. I didn't have much patience to finish it.

I slipped the beads off and threw them in the trash. I grabbed the stone from my bag. I didn't know if my mom would ask me a lot of questions about the box. If she tried to open it I didn't want her to see what had once been inside. Thankfully, she didn't ask too many.

The stone felt warm in my hand and I couldn't help running my fingers over it. This thing was used to cast Kane's immortality. I wonder how it actually worked and why this specific stone? What was so special about it? I would have to ask Kane about it if he ever decides to show up.

Not having Kane with me I realize how he's pretty much the only person I have to talk to and he's not even fully alive. I shook my head. This is what my life has come to.

I shook the thoughts away and I started to coil the wire around the stone making sure it's secure. I made a small loop enough to fit a chain on it. I rummaged through my other things and found the perfect chain for the stone. It's was black and had small silver beads spread on the chain. I slipped it through the loop before hooking it around my neck.

I let the stone hang from the chain feeling surprised that it didn't feel as heavy as I expected it to. Come to think of it, it didn't feel heavy in my hand either. At least I could wear it and I wouldn't have to worry about someone else getting their hands on it.
