"Yo, dickhead! Hurry up! We're going to be late!" Michael, Calum's best friend, yells up to him.
"Aw, I love you too, Mikey," Calum yells back, making a kissy noise at the end. He can see his friend roll his eyes at the bottom of the stair. Calum bounds down the stairs, smacking the back of Michael's head when he gets to the bottom.
"Let's go, mate," Michael says as Cal grabs his bag. Calum can't stand having to go to school. He barely has any friends, he has a C average, and let's be honest, everyone there is absolutely ignorant. Well, almost all of them. There is one boy Calum can stand. Just the thought of him puts Calum on cloud nine. That is until he remembers he can't talk to him. At least not near Michael. Calum doesn't know nor understand why Michael hates him. He's a good bloke. He's actually more than a good bloke. He is the definition of perfection. His laugh is contagious. He radiates happiness. He has the most amazing sense of humor. He would never purposely hurt anyone. Not even Michael, who he has hated since the beginning of year 9. Plus his music taste is fucking amazing. Michael just doesn't see it and since Michael and Calum have been best friends since they were 5, he has to pretend that he can't stand this beautiful blonde. On top of that, Michael is homophobic. Which means Calum has to pretend to be as straight as a ruler, but if he was being honest he has never really had any interest in girls. Absolutely none. But he has always pretended to for the sake of fitting in. Isn't that what everyone wants? To just fit in. There's only one boy in our school, Ashton, who is openly gay. He is also the school outcast for that exact reason. Therefore Calum has decided to keep all of his feelings private and hidden from everyone.
"Are you listening, dipshit?" Michael breaks the brunette out of his thoughts.
"Huh? Oh, um could you say it again?" Calum asks.
Michael rolls his eyes then says, "I was asking if you knew who you're asking to the spring formal?"
"It sounds like you're asking me, Mikey," Calum responds, sending a joking wink in his direction. Which earns him a smack at the back of the head.
"You know I'm not a faggot," He rolls his eyes. The way he spits out the word faggot like it's venom makes me tense up. It's hard to be best friends with someone you know what accept you, but Michael is all Calum has, so he puts up with it. He's always been there since the boys were little. Besides, he doesn't need to know everything about Calum. Not yet at least.

When the two arrive at school they go their separate ways to their lockers, which are across the school from each other. They weren't originally, but the locker that was between the boys' original lockers belongs to no other than Luke Hemmings. Which is a plus for Calum, as he gets to see Luke every stop at his locker. If Calum want to talk to him this is pretty much the only chance he gets, but how could Calum even start a conversation. Hey, I know it seems like I hate you, but I'm actually absolutely, positively, undeniably in love with you! He thinks. Yeah, that would work.
"Idiot," He mutter s.
"Uhm, what?" Calum quickly turns around to see the Luke fucking Hemmings. Well, that's one way to start a conversation. Or to embarass himself. Probably the latter.
"Oh, um it's nothing. Just talking to myself," Cal responds followed by a nervous chuckle. Definitely the latter. He scratches the back of his neck, as he tends to do when he feels embarrassed.
"You're calling yourself an idiot?" Luke asks, raising his eyebrow.
"Heh, yeah. Well before I can embarrass myself anymore, I'm just going to get to class now," He quickly says grabbing the books he needs. He closes his locker and walks away. I practically run to my first class. That's one way to make a first impression.
---
The reality is never the same as one's expectations. For example, Calum thought he would completely wow Luke in their first interaction, but that was obviously not how things turned out. But the reality is also not always as it seems.
