"Okay, I took a picture of it, go ahead."
"Send it to me." I tell Anna, referring to the photo she had taken of our food.
She had gotten a hamburger, while I ordered a turkey wing, along with mashed potatoes. The proportions were extremely large, but for the price we had payed, it was worth it. Not to mention that mashed potatoes were in my DNA, so I would have no problem finishing my plate.
As I take a bite out of my turkey wing, (using a fork! Even though I totally wanted to just grab it and eat, I felt extremely fancy just sitting here, so all my fine dining etiquette was present for this meal.) my eyes widen in amazement.
This was good.
Without even exchanging a word with my foreign friend, I could tell that she was thinking the exact same thing, and I decided that I would be stopping here for dinner at least once more.
"So, last night, after we ate at that place near the catacombs."
"Mhm."
"And then we got home."
"Mhm."
"And then you went to go to the ATM that's a five minute walk from the apartment."
"Mmh."
"Someone rang the doorbell."
"Probably the landlady. She loves to ask us about our week." Annalise guesses, continuing to chew on her burger.
"Unless the landlady looks like a guy and goes by the name Gabriel, then I don't think it was her."
At the mention of his name, shock crossed her face, her mouth dropping slightly as if that was the last thing she expected me to say.
"And?"
"So, I opened the door because I thought it was you and you forgot your keys in the apartment. He had to have been drunk, and he was going on and on about you and an Amanda." I inform her, and she watches me intensely, as if she knew what I would say next and was scared of it.
"I told him he had the wrong apartment, and that I didn't know an Annalise or Amanda, and then I wished him a goodnight and shut the door before he could talk any longer." I wrap up the story from last night, looking through the window to see the sun almost done setting.
As I finish up my meal, Annalise groans, dropping the small piece of her burger onto her plate to rub her temples, then explaining.
"Gabriel is Amanda's ex. Amanda, as in my roommate. He was with her for about three months, and then tried to kiss me. I told him off, of course, and Amanda broke up with him. He's been trying to get back to her for weeks, but she's through for good. Ugh, all French men are pigs."
"Oh? Isn't Jonah French?" I could tell Anna didn't mean her statement, she was just angry about the boy.
"He's from Wisconsin, which I had never heard of until yesterday."
"Sounds exotic." I say, teasing my home without her even knowing.
"No! It's famous for cheese! I researched it. And it's in the USA, how have you not heard of it?"
"Dunno."
We continue to chatter about various things, before I see that it was almost completely dark, and I wanted to get home in time to make a short walk to the ATM. Paris was expensive.
"We should go back home." I suggest, and Annalise looks down at her now empty plate once before agreeing with me.
The moment we're back in her cozy apartment, I take no time to waste, telling her my plans to go to the ATM, and after a quick warning from her on not talking to strangers, I'm off.
