"But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not."
[Qur'an]
Chapter 27:
Accusations and Disappointments
Seated on the couch with a book open on her lap, Anabya stole a glance towards her right where her brother was sitting next to her mum.
Looking at Furqaaan, Anabya was all the more sure why, as a teenager, she had set such high standards for her future husband. The only man she knew growing up was Furqaan, and no matter how much he annoyed her or pulled her leg, he had been a wonderful son, brother and husband. It wasn't entirely her fault for setting her standards so high.
She sighed at the thought. Unfortunately, all that she had imagined as a teenager seemed like an illusion now. It was pointless to expect anything from a world that was too full of itself.
However, at the moment, she was glad that the atmosphere at home was finally settling back to what it had been earlier. She hated fights and despised them all the more when she was the cause. Nonetheless, she was glad that her brother knew how to amend things and admit his fault.
That evening when he came home, she watched in awe as he asked for forgiveness to their mum. Nikhat who initially sported a stern expression eventually melted by her son's charm.
After all, Anabya knew that their mother had the softest spot for Furqaan, and she just couldn't stay angry with him for too long. She loved them all, but somehow Anabya always felt Furqaan was their mother's favourite child.
So when Furqaan apologised for his behaviour and the way he said things, he was forgiven after a few scoldings and tears from Nikhat's side. And it didn't escape anyone's notice that Furqaan was still adamant on what he had said earlier, he was only apologising for the manner in which he put his opinions across.
"So what now?" Anabya finally asked, after the situation at home had taken a lighter note.
As much as she didn't want to bring up the topic once again, she couldn't stand having it hang in the air. She wanted it closed and buried, and she hoped she could live her life in peace.
A bit far fetched, but she so badly wanted it done and dusted.
With the look that Furqaan casted her way, he was asking her why she was bringing it up again when things were only settling now. He was simply unaware how badly Anabya wanted to confirm a future where she wouldn't have to marry her neighbour.
"I think we shouldn't prod much on this topic now," Furqaan finally replied. "All of us have distinct and contrasting views, best we leave it at that. Anabya has a few months to go before her college ends, we should let her concentrate on her studies for now." He may have realized he seemed a little too vocal for their mother's liking so he added, "What do you think, ma?"
"As a mother, Furqaan, you don't know the thoughts that go in my head. If you don't want to consider the proposal Tanzila has got now, I suggest we can look out for other suitors for Anabya. However, if we don't find a suitable match until she finishes her degree in a few months, we're going ahead with Shamaaz's proposal. I think it's only fair."
