Chapter 43:

But Why

Anabya gazed at Shamaaz's laptop that she had borrowed, and as she waited for her requested page to load, she wondered if her life would always be like this, where happiness came to her in parts, sometimes arriving in her arms as if it was besotted with her, and other times, turning away like it didn't know her at all.

The Marwari wedding that they had attended together last night had been a starry affair, and while in the beginning everything was going smoothly as she tried to get accustomed to this life for it was hers now, she didn't know if she'd ever stop saying it, but Shamaaz's behavior was driving her crazy. As he hugged a girl, wrapping his arms around her bare stomach, it had taken everything in Anabya to not run away from the seven star hotel, run away and never look back, bid farewell and never welcome it again.

"You could have easily avoided that," she had later said, but he had only given her a look that meant it wasn't a big deal.

And that is what actually hurt. In their initial days of marriage when Anabya was first introduced to Shamaaz's lifestyle, she had gone bonkers, which was the result for their many fights. But now, she was trying to understand him, she got it that he came from a 'Modern Muslim' background, as he called it, and she was also giving him the benefit of doubt for since his childhood, he was taught all this was normal. But what she absolutely disagreed with was the fact that anytime she tried to correct him, or reason with him, he somehow turned the tables around and focused his entire energy on proving that she was being an extremist.

And that actually made her so mad. Here she was, letting go of everything she had once dreamt of so she could live a peaceful life with him and then there was Shamaaz, who did not want to see her point of view. If she was trying to accommodate him in her life, feeling dreadful about it yet acknowledging that everyone was on different levels of imaan and she'd take this slow with him, he, on the other hand, had a very reckless attitude.

She had stayed quiet the entire time though, realizing that they had just settled a huge fight and couldn't afford to get into another one. Then again, this was something that bothered her, affected her a lot, and while she was silent now, she didn't know how long and till when this would go on. It was but a matter of time, either they'd reach a stage where Shamaaz actually understood her and made a conscious effort to practice the principles of Islam, or she'd reach a point where she couldn't take it in anymore. And then, even she didn't know where they'd end.

She sighed as she focused her attention back on screen, trying hard to understand the rules of cricket and diverting her mind from over thinking about a future that was still blank before her. And as she read through what was posted, trying to understand the concept of LBW, she mentally applauded herself for her effort.

Anabya, the girl who absolutely detested cricket, was actually trying to understand its rules? It was unbelievable even for her.

But then again, she remembered the time she had spent all by herself at the beach and made up her mind to give in her hundred percent in this relationship, try and try some more. So that's exactly what she was doing.
