I walk into the school office and look to see my dad sitting in the chair closest to the door.
He is reading a magazine and doesn't seem to notice me.
"Hello." I say, and he finally looks up.
"Oh sorry Taylor, I was just reading a fascinating article." He tells me, and it was obvious he was trying to sound professional around the office ladies and teachers.
"That's nice... dad.... um... why did you want to see me?" I ask him, as I take a step back.
He looks around, "We can't discuss this here" He whispers. "I got you an early dismissal, we can discuss this outside." He explains.
"What? I'm sorry, but I'm not going anywhere with you." I manage to say.
He looks around, "Look Taylor, we don't have time for this. Go get what you need and lets go." He says, and I can tell he is trying to control his temper.
I roll my eyes and go to get my stuff, I won't need to see Mark so that's a benefit. But I definitely don't want to go with my dad.
I approach my locker and open it up, putting some books away.
When I'm done I walk back and see my dad already outside. I slowly make my way to him, and with no words, I follow him to the car. It was a dark, chocolatey brown. It was big enough to fit 5 people, and it was very nice.
I take a seat in the front, while my dad puts my book bag in the back.
When he's done he finally sits down and starts driving, still not saying anything. "Dad, I better be back by 4, I have some where to be." I tell him sternly.
"Alright, alright, this will only take a bit. You need to know why I left your mom, she hasn't told you everything." He says to me.
"Well... what don't I know?" I ask, feeling the fear build up inside of me.
There is a long pause.
"One day, probably when you were only 2, I had gone to work, and to make a good impression, invited my boss over for dinner. Her name was Diane." He explains. I nod, I couldn't tell where this was going.
"I had called your mom and told her, and she automatically grew with jealousy. When Diane arrived, dinner was basically ready. When it was served, we started to eat, and I began to talk about a possible promotion, but then Diane told me she wasn't feeling well and left early." He says, sounding upset.
"I found out your mother had-had poisoned Diane's food out of jealousy.....Diane had died the next day." Dad tells me, sounding as if he was about to cry.
"When I confronted your mother about it, she told me that the lady was flirting with me, and I was amazed because she wasn't, we discussed business the whole time, and out of annoyance and sadness I left her. I mean, she killed someone, for no good reason. I felt guilty, even though I didn't do anything, I felt it was my responsibility... and I just feel like if i didn't invite her for dinner.... I wouldn't feel like I messed up." My dad says, and now he was crying.
My dad stops the car on the side of the road.
Mom was a murderer, I couldn't believe it. How could I face her now?
I hug my dad, it felt good to hug him, to know he wasn't crazy, to know I could trust him.
"Dad... how did you know she poisoned Diane?" I ask. I had some questions.
"Your mom left the bottle of poison out on the counter." He tells me quietly.
"And how did you get into our house?" I ask. I was just curious now, I wasn't mad.
"The back door was unlocked. I wanted to warm you, you had to know. But you ran and got your mom, I couldn't blame you, I would run too." He tells me.
He begins to drive, and I realized he was taking me home.
"Promise to come back, to see me?" I ask when we reach the house.
He does a small grin, "I promise." He whispers, and drives away after I get out and get my book bag.
I walk into the house, I ignore my mom, I ignore her questions about why I'm back early, I couldn't face her.
I lay in my room for a while, and wait until it's 4:00. When it is, I finally start to get ready. I take out a silver dress, it was simple but pretty. I put on some heels and expensive make up, and soon enough walk down stairs ready to leave. I needed Kayden, I needed someone I could talk to.
I looked for my mom, it was going to be awkward asking her to take me, but I was not going to walk to Kaydens. I just didn't have that kind of effort.
I walk into the living room, the tv was on and she was so concentrated she didn't even notice me.
"Mom... could you drive me to um... my friends?" I ask.
She doesn't move, she is simply staring at the tv.
I tap her shoulder. She glances over.
"Oh Taylor, sorry, I didn't notice you".
I nod, "Could you drive me to my friends?" I repeat, and she sits there for a bit.
She rolls off the couch and gets her keys.
"I'll meet you in the car." She says, and I walk out.
It was super cold, I jump in and wait for her to come.
Finally I hear the car door open and see her sit down in the drivers seat. She starts the car, and doesn't speak the whole ride. Did she know dad told me?
While I was thinking, I didn't even notice we had arrived at Kaydens.
"Bye mom." I mutter as I exit the car. She stares straight forward, there was no wave, no acknowledgment. I walk out and over to the front door.
I knock, and in the matter of 5 seconds, he opens the door.
"Hello, you look stunning." Kayden says, scanning me from head to toe, showing his beautiful smile.
Without saying anything I hug him, that's all, I had needed this since morning.
"Mark tried again Kayden....he stopped me in the hall" I say randomly. Why was I acting like such a freak? There was just so much to tell him.
Kaydens smile turned into an angry look.
"Don't worry about it, please. I just don't want you getting hurt, I simply want to spend time with you." I say, putting on a slight grin. Kayden takes my hand and we walk inside.
We walk over to the couch and sit down. I slowly lean up against him, his presence just made me feel safe.
And with that, I slowly shut my eyes and fall asleep.
