"What?!" I bellowed of rage. "Selena, you can't be damn serious?! You can't quit the freaking mission!"
"Do you see any other solution right now, Demi?! And don't even suggest the possibility of quitting Justin, because that's a no-no!"
I shut my mouth and thought intensely of any other ways to deal with the situation, but either way, it's a win-lose situation. "I don't know," I admitted after a while. "I mean, the best solution would be to tell him the truth, but that's too dangerous. He could be one of them."
"What?!" roared Selena, outraged. "No no no, this is not true. I can't believe you would even think anything like that, Demi. Have a little faith in my judgment."
"We never know," I insisted carefully. "He might be working for Zac as a spy and fooling you since the very beginning. You can't trust anyone during a mission and you know that, Sel."
I heard a dreadful silence and retained my breath. I was scared that my friend would literally jump out from the cellphone and cut me to pieces. I could already hear her heavy breathing, and that always meant the preparation of an argument.
"You are being ridiculous, Demi. Justin would never do that to me, is it clear? I thought that you would support my relationship as a real friend would, but I guess not. Now I understand why Ariana chose to not have anything to do with you. I can't believe you're doubting me like that! I should've phoned Miley, she'd be a way better friend."
Her words stung deep. I was having way too many arguments with everyone in a short period of time, and with the mission, it all exhausted me too much. "You're overreacting, Selena," I whined. "I didn't mean it like that and you know it. I was just pointing out the possibilities and how unsafe your actions are. Stop being so impulsive with your relationships."
"Oh, so now you're judging my relationships?" Selena exclaimed in indignation. "I could judge yours too, you know. Stop running from the truth and hating on Joe if you're deep down desperately in love with him! It's exactly what a coward would do!"
How did everyone know my feelings for Joe? Maybe I genuinely didn't hide them well... "Don't bring Joe into this," I pleaded, not wanting to diverge the subject of our fight. "Plus, you don't know half of my relationship with him."
"I know more than you do!" She snapped, the argument getting uglier and uglier by second. "I think it's understandable why he'd never love you back; you're impossible to talk to! I wanted some comfort, some advice, some love, but you only trashed me and made me feel even worse than before! Screw you, Demi! I'm ashamed to have ever considered you a friend."
"I didn't trash you!" I defended myself fiercely. "I only pointed out how irresponsible you were, and I tried to make sure that our team would be safe! It was you who started arguing with me, and bringing other people like Ari or Joe into this! That's just plain immature, Selena! But you know what? I don't care anymore! Do what you want, act like a girl who sleeps with strangers, I don't give a damn."
Another silence. I never ever fought with her before, especially not like that. She had such a bright personality, so why did she dish out on me? Plus, she knows how stubborn I am. I never want to lose an argument.
"You criticized me, Demi. I only defended myself," growled the blonde girl through gritted teeth. "I'm glad I saw your true colors today so that I could cut this friendship before you really stab me in the back. That's what you are, Demi. A hypocrite."
Did I mention catfights are the worst? Especially with your best friends since they know you so well. They know where it hurts, and they know how to throw punches right on your heart.
