It was terrible.
Approximately a week passed before the two spoke more than two words to each other, and of course this day was the day before valentine's day.
Ever since the argument, Phil had had more dates with George, but no other sexual encounters with him, luckily. Dan began his new job and quit the old one, happily. He also found more time to hang out with Louise, and sometimes even visited her during her shift at the bar in which she worked. He poured his feelings out to her, not knowing whether to be pissed at Phil or to apologize.
Eventually, Phil spoke to Dan.
It was a Sunday morning, neither had work. They were both in the living room, sitting at opposite ends of the couch. Phil was texting George, Dan was texting Louise, both were trying to coax their friend/partner into speaking to the other. Phil broke the silence,
"Hey," he said, looking over to Dan. He had basically just said hello, but it was a start.
"Hi," Dan said, putting down his phone and giving Phil his attention. Then, as if there had been a plug in their mouths, and it had just been pulled, the words they had both pent up spouted from their lips. Both rambling to the other, neither caught what the other had said, but neither of them cared. They both ended in an
"I'm sorry."Silence.
"Let's try that again. You go first," Phil suggested. Dan nodded.
"I know you were new to the relationship, and I guess I was just being a bit protective over you. You're my best friend, and I'd hate to see you taken advantage of like that. From my perspective, it had seemed like he basically raped you, in a way. Maybe it's different, though, I guess I just assumed the worst and I'm sorry," he said, offering a small smile. "Your turn."
"Okay, so I guess I should've been aware that you were just looking out for me and I guess I was so blinded by this new relationship that I just ignored the worst possible option of what even happened. Either way, I talked to George about it, and though he never really said that he had purposefully gotten me drunk to fuck me, he apologized. We both agreed to never have sex while drunk. Plus, I also expressed that I didn't really want to do it, anyway. We'll wait a while before doing it again. I'm sorry," he said, pulling Dan in for a hug. "I hated not speaking to you," he said, letting go.
"Me too. You wanna do something fun today, to get our minds off of all this drama and shit?" Dan asked, swerving the topic of the discussion.
"Please," Phil smiled.~•~
Of course they had chosen the perfect time to go out, about ten at night. It was freezing, both of them were huddled together in their winter jackets. They were in a park, the only thing illuminating the area were lights that were scattered every few yards. Dan and Phil stood over a river on a bridge, staring at the clear night sky. Stars were scattered across the navy dome above the two, and they let themselves relax for a little.
"You ever wonder what happens after death?" Dan wondered aloud. Phil didn't respond, so he kept going, "I'm an aetheist, so I personally don't believe in heaven or any of that shit. But, like, does the world just go black? I always imagine that it's just over. You're submerged in darkness with only your own thoughts for the rest of eternity. It's quite depressing, honestly," Dan said, leaning his head on his gloved hand.
"I'd like to think that we get reincarnated into an animal the reflects our personality. Like, we keep all our memories and stuff, but were some animal," Phil said, taking a more positive outlook.
"I'd just become a hedgehog and curl up away from the world," Dan laughed. "You?"
"I dunno, maybe a monkey or something. They're pretty energetic."
"I can see you as a dog, like a cute little puppy," Dan rationalized. "One of those dogs that are super friendly and go sniffing around everything and jump on top of their owners every time they return home from work." Phil nodded.
"I can't see you as that much of a hedgehog, though," he said, "Maybe a sloth? You'd get to sleep all day and move slowly."
"I'm not that bad," Dan punched Phil lightly on the arm, chuckling. They both fell silent again, just allowing themselves to enjoy the quiet evening. Phil broke the comfortable silence.
"You know, when I first met you, I was overjoyed. I waited outside the flat with anticipation, I was super nervous. Why? I guess you were a new friend and I didn't want to weird you out or anything. Stuff is different in real life compared to over text," he said, random thoughts leaking from his mouth.
"I was nervous, too. Same thoughts. I didn't want to lose you because I'm even more of a loser in person. You know, there was period of true depression I had between my mum completely betraying my trust and you moving in. I had literally no one, I had literally no reason to be alive. I never really considered doing anything dumb, though. I wasn't going to cut or kill myself, I knew it would get better eventually. It just felt like forever, I suppose," Dan said, not allowing himself to look Phil in the eyes."If I had known..." Phil's voice bore hurt. He wanted to help, but he didn't.
"There was nothing you could've done," Dan assured, turning to Phil, who's eyebrows were furrowed in concern. His icy eyes tried to read Dan's face, they tried to figure him out.
"Why didn't you tell me at that moment?"
"I didn't want to burden you, plus, I was just waiting for it to pass by," Dan said trying to wave it off, but Phil was being stubbornly kind.
"I could've helped."
"It's fine."
"No more secrets," Phil said, looking Dan directly in the eyes. "Promise me," he demanded, holding out his pinkie finger.
"Seriously? A pinkie swear?"
"It's an unbreakable promise," Phil smiled slightly. Dan took the other's pinkie with his own.
"No more secrets. Promise," he nodded, his fingers crossed behind his back.There. No Pheorge at all.
