First smile

I look down at the baby carrier that my hand grasped the handle of, seeing Alana staring up at me. Only being around three weeks old, she didn’t smile, but she was still adorable. Her big eyes watch my every move as I walk through the mall, trying to find Elena. Sitting at a table in the food court, I see her staring at her hands that rested on the table, fiddling with her fingers. I weave in between people, being careful not to bump the baby carrier into anyone’s legs. Slowly, her head lifts up and she sees me, grinning. I smile back at her, and was engulfed in one of her bone crushing hugs when I reach the table.

“Hey Anna,” she says to me. She pulls away and looks down at Alana, who was staring up at both of us. “How’s Allie?” She asks, bending down to get a better look at her.

I grin, looking down at my daughter. “She’s great, now that Hunt’s back. She really doesn’t like me as much as she likes him.” I say, laughing gently.

Elena holds one of Alana’s hands in her own, trying to get her to smile. “Well aren’t you just adorable?” She says. “Can I hold her?” She asks me.

“Of course,”

She unbuckles her and lifts her up, supporting her small head in her hands. “So, I need to talk to you about something.” She says to me, sitting back down in her seat.

I place myself down in the seat across from her, letting my hands rest on my lap. “Sure, what’s up?” I asked, watching as she smiled down at Alana.

She reaches one hand over to her purse and shuffles through it, eventually pulling out a white paper. I look at her, and see that she was biting down on her bottom lip, to keep from freaking out.

“Read this.” She says to me, laying it on the table, and then goes back to trying to make Alana laugh.

I hold it in my hands gently, scanning my eyes over the words. I grin widely as I realize that this was in fact, adoption papers. Paper clipped to the bottom of the white paper was a picture of a small child, and after reading through it all quickly, I see that he was a six month old boy from Sweden, named Destin. His big brown eyes sparkled and I feel myself mentally awing at his smile.

"Elena, this is great! When were you planning to tell me that you were adopting?!” I tried to sound cross with her, but I was too happy to be cross.

I see her smiling from ear to ear. “We didn’t want to tell anyone till we were sure that the adoption was approved.” She explains, putting the paper back in her purse, after smiling at the picture of her soon to be son, and the soon to be addition to our blossoming family.

I walk inside the front door of the house, being slightly tired from walking around with Elena all day, not to mention dragging Alana’s baby carrier around with me. Elena kept asking if I wanted her to carry it, but since she had accidentally left her purse at K-Mart, I didn’t exactly want her leaving my child somewhere, even though my eyes would probably never leave her.

I hear music playing through the sound system softly, hearing Play it Again, by the one and only Luke Bryan. Shuffling of feet was heard from the staircase as I see Hunter’s feet, which were in converse, quickly running down.

“Hey babe, how was the mall?” He asks, smiling at me.

I set the carrier down on the sofa, letting Hunter’s arms circle me. “It was great.” I say, hugging him.

Today was the first day he had been back, and I felt bad that I was spending all day with El, when I should have been home with Hunter. He seemed sad when I left, and was even sadder that I was taking Alana with me.

“Great,” he pulls away, showing me the cutest smile he could muster up.

Slowly, he leans in, brushing lips against mine. I bite my bottom lip, and then stand up on my tip toes to close the distance between us. I hear Alana making cooing noises in the background, but ignore it since she wasn’t fussing. His arms tighten around my waist as he deepens the kiss slightly.

"Ok, could you at least wait till I left?" I hear Lynette say jokingly, walking down stairs.

I feel myself blushing as I pull away from him, tucking my hair behind my ears. “Sorry Ma.” He says, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck.

I look at her, but wish I didn’t when she looks right into my eyes. “Well, I’m off to see Caroline, and then I’m going home. Goodbye hugs?” She asks with a soft smile.

Hunter goes up to hug her immediately, and I can’t help but imagine him as his five year old self, hugging his loving mother after a long day in kindergarten. I go and unbuckle Alana, taking her out of the carrier. God knows Lynette wouldn’t leave until she gave her granddaughter a few fair cuddles.

“Let me see this child.” She grins, motioning for Alana.

Gladly, I hand her over, watching closely as Lynette handles our precise daughter in her arms. She starts cooing to the baby as I feel Hunter’s arm slowly drape around my waist.

“You’re going to be so beautiful, like your mommy, and so talented, like your daddy. You’re so blessed, child. Nana loves you.” She leans her head down, gently pressing a kiss to her short, tight blonde curls.

I see Lynette crying as she lays the baby in Hunter’s arms gently. She turns to me, wiping away her tears, and then hugs me tightly. “I’ve known you since you were three, Siana. I just wanted to tell you how much I love you, and if he ever treats you differently, I give you all rights to beating him with a broom.” She chuckles against my shoulder.

I rub her back. “Got it,” I laughed.

She leans away from me, trying to pull herself together. “Ok, I’m off now. I need to go before I won’t be able to anymore.” She laughs, wiping away her tears. “I’ll see you soon, I hope.” She says with a grin.

“I love you, Ma.” Hunter says to her, switching his attention from the baby to his teary eyed mother.

“I love you to sweetie.” She says, pulling her suitcase towards the door.

She bids us fair well as she walks out the door, leaving Hunter to look sad, maybe slightly lost. I put a hand on his shoulder, smiling gently. “It’s ok Hunt,” I whisper.

He nods his head, grabbing my hand with his free one. After a moment, he lays Alana down in my arms, telling me that we were going to have a Disney movie marathon, for Allie’s sake. I go to the sofa and lay her on my lap as Hunter puts on Toy Story, even though there was no way she’d even understand what the movie is. She was only a month old, but I think he was just using it as an excuse. As she stares up at me, I smile down at her, hoping she’d catch on and smile back. She just continued to move her mouth around, trying to make a new noise, as usual.

Hunter eventually, after making popcorn, sits down next to me, and we both look down at our child. He puts his index fingers to the corners of his mouth, showing her a smile.

“Smile for daddy!” He says.

She looks at him, looks back to me, but then looks at him again. Curiosity filled the green eyes of this child as we smile down at her, and just like that, we were blinded with the grin that slowly appears on her chubby face.

I hear him sigh gently, laying the side of his head against mine. “She’s got your beautiful smile.” He whispers, wrapping a hand around mine.
