The fuzz ball

“Siana, come on, we need to be at the hospital before Caroline wakes up!” Hunter shouts from downstairs as I struggle to change Alana’s clothes.

I groan in frustration. “Well, Hunter, when you only give me twenty minutes to get two people ready, there’s a good chance we’re going to be late!” I shout back to him, but then smile back down at Alana who looked close to tears with my rise of voice.

I get her in her onesie, which happened to be green today, and quickly lay her down on mine and Hunter’s bed. She coos at me as I made sure we had everything she’d need. As I shuffle through the diaper bag I see Hunter walk in, silent for a few moments.

“I’m sorry, Z.” He says eventually, walking over to the bed. Swiftly, he picks Alana up and places her on his lap, putting on her socks while making weird faces at her.

I shrug my shoulders. “It’s fine,” I mumble.

I hear Charlie barking madly from downstairs, causing Hunter and I to trade confused glances. Before he could stop me, I quickly skip out of the room and barrel down the stairs, seeing that Charlie was scratching at the bottom of the door and going insane.

“Charlotte!” I shout, trying to stop her before she ruined the floor.

She looks up at me and starts whining, but then looks back down at the door. As I walk closer I see the damage that her nails had caused to the hard wood, and sigh.

“Back up, missy.” I say harshly, but was then surprised when she did as I ordered.

I wrap my hand around the cool metal of the doorknob, slowly opening the door. As I do, I see that nothing was out of the ordinary. Kids played on the sidewalks across the street, light fluffy clouds were scattered across the blue sky, and the sounds of engines rumbled in my ears as cars drive by.

“You’re insane, dog.” I say, looking down at her.

I feel small needle like objects dig into the tops of my feet as soon as I try to close the door, and scream. Hunter immediately started yelling from upstairs, asking if I were ok, as I tried to figure out what the small ball of fur next to me was.

“A kitten!” I shout, more to myself than anyone else.

Slowly, the fuzz ball looks up at me, and I’m met with eyes as green as Harry’s, and fur as white as snow. This kitten couldn’t have been any bigger than my foot, which meant it was awfully small.

“Awe, we aren’t you just adorable?” I awe at it, bending over to pick it up.

It meows at me as I hold him at eye level. His fur, now that I was looking closer, was as white as snow, yet a light brown color portrayed it. I see Charlie staring up at as if this kitten were to be her next meal, and gently slap her nose.

“Don’t eat it, Charlotte!” I whined, bringing the fluff ball against my chest.
