Chapter 31: The Kiss

Marcel's POV

Allie and I didn't have the best relationship ever. But I was okay with that. In my eyes, we did have a perfect relationship. But if you think about it logically, we didn't. No couple is perfect.

Allie sat with Brad, his friends, and I during lunch. At first she seemed uncomfortable, but then she got used to it. She once told me that she looked forward to lunch everyday now.

We sat down at our new usual table to the new usual greetings. I sat next to Brad, and Allie sat across from me, next to Susan. This was our new normal routine.

"Hey, guys," Allie said, smiling broadly. "How's your day going?"

"Pretty good," Susan replied. "I sang in the shower today."

Allie laughed. "That's good, I guess. Are you improving?"

"Everyone sounds good in the shower."

They both laughed. Brad and I didn't engage in their conversation. Instead we started our own.

"Any fiends to report?" Brad asked.

I shook my head. "Nope, everything's fine. I'm having a great day today."

"That's new," Brad joked.

"It builds character," I joked right back.

"I'm not so sure about that," Susan interjected. "Rachel was being a jerk today."

Allie shrugged. "That's normal for her."

"I guess, but she just won't stop. It's so annoying."

"Just be grateful it's not Adam," Brad said. "He's the worst. He almost stuck my head in the toilet today."

"That's awful!" Allie gasped.

"He didn't succeed," Brad reassured her. "Luckily for me, a teacher came in and Adam ran."

"He's such a coward," Allie smirked. "He can't do anything right."

"He's garish," I scoffed. "And terrible."

"Says the guy who punched him," Susan giggled.

I tensed. I didn't like it when people brought that up. I wanted that to disappear from my memory, from my guilty conscience.

Allie sensed my discomfort and quickly asked, "How did you guys do on the physics test? I thought I bombed it."

I flashed her a quick thank-you smile. She returned it. You're welcome, she mouthed.

"Are you kidding?" Brad sniffed. "It was so easy. I totally aced it."

"Speak for yourself," Susan retorted. "I thought it was hard, but I still got an A-plus."

"So did I," I said, not necessarily agreeing with the difficulty level. "How'd you do, Allie?"

She sighed and looked down at the table. "To think I'm the only dumb one at the smart table...."

I put my hand on hers. "Come on, I'm sure you didn't do that bad."

She looked up, hesitated, then blurted out, "I got an A-plus!"

We all gaped at her as she started to laugh. "You all totally fell for it!" she cried. "You think I'm dumb! Thanks a lot!"

"No, no," I said hastily. "I don't think you're dumb, I-I just thought--"

Allie shut me up by giving me a quick kiss. "I forgive you," she giggled.

"Ugh, no PDA at the table, please," Brad groaned. Susan snickered and reached across the table to punch his arm. She really liked Brad, and yet he was totally oblivious.
