Have you ever tried putting a whole marshmallow into a fire? You should. It slowly turns brown, then fizzes melts until there's nothing left of it. That's how Millie felt. She felt like a deflated balloon as she ran. Lucky for her it was lunch, and lunch was basically free time. She found herself sitting on a cold bench in a park. She calmed down and looked around. The park had wonderful, big play structures and many stone benches, like Millie was sitting on. Behind Millie was a giant tree, and on it was a tire swing.... Wait. Millie knew this place.... A rush of memories suddenly hit her. Her mom pushing her on the tire swing, Millie laughing and smiling. This is the park that Millie always used to go to. They would wait until no one was there so they could have he park all to themselves. Millie couldn't stop her tears from falling. She tried to wipe them away, but the only result was red, wet eyes and cheeks. She tried to get the memories out of her head, but they were fresh in her mind. You would think they would be happy memories. And they were. But anything about her mom reminded her of what happened.. She shook her head.
Millie jumped when she heard the crunching of feet on the ground, walking towards her. Great. The last thing Millie needed was someone here. She started to get up and walk away, but she felt a hand on her shoulder. She spun around and slapped the hand down, a move that her dad had taught her. She was about to run away when, through her blur of tears, she saw Finn. She looked at him, and he looked back. She was about to walk away when Finn said: "Millie, I know we haven't known each other for long, but it just seems right to me..." He paused. "Will you go to the prom thing with me?" Millie smiled. Finn nervously rubbed his hands together. Millie nodded and smiled the biggest she's ever smiled before. Millie had thought she was going to be alone forever. Could this really be happening?? It was. She ran to Finn and hugged him. He hesitated for a second, surprised, but then gladly hugged back. Finns hugs were amazing. His arms were strong, and Millie felt safe and comforted. She was crying, but because she was so happy. Finn pulled away and wiped Millie's tears away. She smiled shyly. "Come on, lunch is almost over." Finn said. Before they walked away, he offered his hand to Millie. She gladly took it, and they walked hand-in-hand back to school.
