Chapter 39: Pain

8 months later, another squad reunion at Lauren's house

A few months ago, Lauren and the squad threw me a surprise birthday party. They're such sweethearts. Now, I'm at another squad reunion with Dom, and my stomach is huge. I should be due any day now. Suddenly, I felt something pop inside me. And then my stomach started hurting really bad. I thought it was maybe something I ate, but as the night progressed the pain kept getting worse and worse. I sat down on the couch, breathing heavily. I cried out in pain. Dom And the squad ran to my side.
"Lilly, I think your water broke." Lauren said, indicating at the wet spot on my pants.
"Oh my god! We have to get my girlfriend to the hospital right now!" Dom yelled.
Alex and Dom helped me get into the car and they rushed me to the nearest hospital. By then the contractions had started kicking in, which hurt like hell. The doctors helped me change into the hospital gown and I was 9 centimeters dilated. The contractions went from being 5 minutes apart to 3. The doctors and nurses had gotten everything ready and one of the nurses had brought Dom in and I gripped his hand, as if my life depended on it.
"Ok, sweetie, its time to push." And so I push. I push and push, but then I got too tired and started crying.
"Baby, listen, you know what Jane's mom had said to her when she was giving birth? '5 more minutes of pain, for a lifetime of happiness'." said Dom.
With newfound energy, I pushed until the baby was out. The doctors cleaned the baby and evaluated her to make sure everything was okay. It was a girl! We decided to name her Jasmine. I tried to get up, but I instantly laidd back down because I felt too dizzy. Like Dom had said, even though it was painful, it was so so worth it. And with that thought, my eyes got heavy and I fell asleep. The next time I woke up, the doctor told me it was around 1pm. Dom was sitting in a chair right next to my bed. He looked up and saw that I had woke up. He kissed me on the cheek.
"Good morning, or should I say good afternoon, darling." He chuckles.
"Hey love."
I ask the nurse if I could see the baby because I wanted to hold her in my arms. The nurse brought her in and I gazed lovingly at her. Dom looked so proud. We each took turns and held her. In the moment, I realized that everything had worked out perfectly.
