"I love you." The words come out so unnaturally it's as if I have never learned them before.
"Again" Janell says, as she looks deep into my eyes.
"I.. Love...You." This time I tried annunciating the first letter of each word with as much emphasis as I could muster up.
"Again!" I'm getting sick of hearing that.
"I LOVE YOU!!"
Janell looks at me with utter disgust "Why the heck did you scream it? Nobody wants to be shouted at Milo. Now take it from the top." I take a deep breath, getting ready to say for possibly the millionth time.
"Thalia, we have been inseparable since middle school. It may seem a little strange to you, but I have had these feelings for a while now. I... I know the timing might be a little off, but I want you to know that.... I love you."
"How is it that we've been practicing for two hours and you are just getting worse?" I roll my eyes as a short response.
"How is she going to believe that you're in love with her when you can't even get the stupid sentence out without turning pale and starting to sweat?" She's right. How can I profess my love to the girl who has been there through thick and thin... through the good days and the bad... through those years of the bangs and disgusting braces? How can I profess my love to someone who I have adored since the moment our eyes have met? How can I profess my love to my best friend? How do I profess my love to my best friend..... who is getting married into two days. "I just don't think it's the best time to tell her. I should just let it go."
"LET IT GO? Milo, I did not watch you suffer all of these years for you not to tell her how you feel." Janell practically spits the words out at me to get it through my thick skull. "If you don't tell her you're in love with her then I'm doing it for you. And I'm not ready for that awkward conversation."
"Janell, we are literally going to her rehearsal dinner tomorrow night. I'm the 'man of honor'."
"Don't remind me. I'm still bitter about that." I can't help but let out a laugh. Out of all the friends in our group, I was chosen to be Thalia's maid of honor. It was obvious that I would be at the top of the list to be chosen. Well understandable to everyone except for Janell and our other friend January. "Well you just can't let her get married without knowing that her best friend had been in love with her since middle school."
"I can. And I will."
"What if she's in love with you too?"
"I think we would have found out by now, Janell. It's too late. She's going to live her life with the 'man of her dreams' and they are going to live happily ever after and I'll find someone else. Hey maybe I'll marry you!" Janell starts to laugh. The type of laugh that makes tears spill out of your eyes unintentionally. The type of laugh that would obviously be contagious to everyone in the room if they weren't just practically offended by one of their best friends. She finally calms herself enough to muster up a sentence.
"You are not my type honey. And don't think I'm just going to settle for you because you couldn't get the girl."
"Hey, it was just an idea!" I also can't help myself from letting out a soft chuckle at the thought too. "Also, don't call that man that she's marrying 'the man of her dreams', because if anyone had a dream about that man... it would be a nightmare. Have you seen how much hair he has? And I'm not just talking about his head! No, you do not want to see that man in a v- neck. I would choose you over him any day."
