Sunday, August 20
Two weeks ago, I went to a new church, and I really liked it, so Ava and I decided to go back today. When we were there the first time, we met a couple, Adrian and Jess who have a daughter, Kaylen, Ava's age. Kaylen will also be going Ava's school this year.
Adrian brought his younger sister to church today. She's a petite blonde girl with sun kissed skin. She's a year younger than me.
"Hey," I said to this girl, "I'm Steven."
"Hey, I'm Morgan," she said to me, giving me her hand.
Adrian smiled at us. "Steven also just moved to town a few months ago. Kaylen is in the cafeteria right now, playing with his niece, Ava."
"Oh, nice!" Morgan said. "Where are you from?"
"Alabama."
Morgan looked at Adrian. "We're from New Mexico, but we have family here."
"Oh, yeah? Are you just visiting family today or...?"
"I'm in town for the eclipse. We're driving to Missouri tomorrow, but I'm looking at jobs up here, too." She looked at me. "So what brought you up here?"
"My aunt is a principal at a middle school up here, and when she offered me a job, I knew I had to take her up on it."
"What subject are you gonna teach?"
"I'll be teaching eight grade English."
"That's awesome. How do you like Iowa so far?"
I laughed a little. "It's different, but it's okay. Do you like where you're at now though?"
She shrugged. "I mean, my parents are still down there, and I'm an accountant down there, but I don't know if I wanna raise a family there."
"That's how I felt, too."
"Do you have any kids?" she asked.
I gave Jess a little smile. I hate explaining my life story to people. "I have custody of my niece."
"Oh, gotcha." She kind of shied away all of a sudden, it felt like because then she looked at her watch and said, "Oh, man, it's 9:25, we should head on in."
I don't like telling people that because I want people to look beyond my circumstances and see the real me.
The pastor talked about the solar eclipse. He explained that we sometimes forget Who made the world and the beautiful things in it.
After church, Adrian asked us, "Hey, do you guys have lunch plans?"
I shook my head. "No, we don't."
"Wanna go grab lunch with us?" Jess asked.
"Sure," I said.
Morgan and I ended up sitting next to each other at the restaurant.
"I'm really thinking about moving up here," she told me.
"You should," I told her.
She sighed a little. "I don't know if I want to be an accountant though, ya know?"
"What do you want to do?"
She laughed a little. "Honestly, I want to be a manager somewhere. I don't want to be in a big store, but I want to be in a store where there's around 20 employees."
"What kind of store?"
"I don't know yet, but if you see any openings for a manager, let me know."
"I will."
"Why a manager?" Jess asked.
Morgan laughed a little. "Well, I love talking to people, and I want a job where I can see people from all different walks of life, and I want to make people's day, ya know?"
"Be a Walmart greeter," I said.
Morgan smiled a little. "Well, ya know, maybe in a different world that would work, but I would like to eventually have a house someday."
"You could've just invented solar eclipse glasses, and you would've been rich by now," I told her.
She laughed out loud. "Oh, yes."
"My cousin works at a bar, and she's actually looking for someone to work more night shifts, so if your interested, let me know."
"Well, I did go to bartending school right out of college." I didn't expect that from this kind of girl.
"Really?" I asked.
She laughed a little, nodding. "Yup."
"Are you interested?"
"Yes, actually."
"I can give you my cousin's phone number, and I'm sure she'd be willing to talk to you."
Adrian laughed a little. "Well, Morgan, I think you'd be great at it."
She smiled at him. "I know how to make fifty different types of drinks."
I don't personally drink, but I don't see anything wrong with it unless you're abusing it.
At the end, Morgan gave me her number, and we have been texting all day. Ronda, my cousin, is interested in interviewing her.
