He was rejected once more. Under a fake name, but nonetheless, he had been rejected again.
"You should just give up Steve. There is plenty good things to do here in Brooklyn." Bucky sighed as he placed a few pennies on the counter for Steve's sweets and his cigarettes. He never smoked them around Steve though, he never dared to. He could make one pack last two months really, as he only smoked one when he needed to take the edge off his stress, which coincidently was normally thanks to his friend, Steve.
"I don't want to stay here in Brooklyn when men are laying their lives down on the field. I should do the same, shouldn't I?" Steve took the candy off the counter. "And stop paying for my things without asking. I'm not poor."
"I'm doing it cause I can. You need some sugar with your low blood pressure." He shrugged, stealing a bite of his candy bar with a smirk.
"Sure." Steve rolled his eyes.
"Anyway, back to what I was saying, you don't have to sacrifice yourself when you're doing a great job here. Plus, you might score a pretty gal without us muscle heads around." He ruffled Steve's hair as Steve bit his candy bar, trying to ignoring the fact that Bucky's germs had contaminated it. Was it appropriate to smack someone for stealing your snacks? Maybe.
"I don't care about girls Bucky, I want to fight."
"You don't care about girls? Lies! Every guy has a soft spot for the ladies." Bucky ignored the last part of his sentence.
"I mean, I like girls, but that doesn't mean I'm interested in dating them right now."
"You're going to die a virgin with that thinking."
"Romance isn't about sex Bucky, but either way, I don't care. I want to focus on winning the war instead."
"War this, war that, relax Steve. Just enjoy your youth and find a nice gal, settle down." He honestly couldn't see Steve settling down with a girl. Then again, he couldn't see that future for himself either. He felt like their future would just be the two of them until they die, drinking beers and enjoying each other's company.
'Okay, that sounds a bit poof-ish, Buck.' He thought to himself.
"Buck? Anyone home?" Steve said, munching on his candy bar as he waved a hand in front of Bucky's face.
"Hm?" Bucky rose his brow. "What is it?"
"Nothing, you're just spacing out."
"Oh, sorry. What did you say?"
"I was just saying, I don't think I'll ever settle down. At least, not for a while." Steve admitted, looking down at his wrapper. He tossed it in the trash can as they walked past it.
"Me too Steve. Me too." Steve didn't question his words.
⌛️⌛️⌛️
Bucky awoke to a knock on his window. He got out quickly. It was either a stalker or Steve. Probably Steve. Bucky opened the window and Steve crawled in, groaning as he laid on the floor.
"What happened?" Bucky crouched by him in concern.
"The usual." Steve coughed, taking a few deep gulps of air.
