Steve was practically crushed in a hug when he opened the door.
"Woah, what's up?" Steve patted Bucky's back, thinking he might be upset before he heard laughter.
"I got promoted Stevie. I'm a Sergeant now." He said happily, grin wide as he looked down at Steve. His happiness was obvious as the light of day.
"That's...That's amazing." Steve beamed at his achievement, his resolve in joining the army only weaving tighter into his heart as he looked at Bucky's gleeful expression. Steve closed the door behind Bucky, finally noticing the uniform in Bucky's hands. "New uniform too?"
"No, I just- They stitched my title into my uniform, I was so excited I had to come here right away." He admitted with a breathless laugh. Steve smiled at his friend and wrapped his arms around Bucky again, squeezing him slightly. Bucky returned the embrace, practically shaking with his excitement. Steve could feel it, making his smile grow wider. He placed a small kiss just under Bucky's ear.
"That's cheating." Bucky teased as he out of the embrace to give him a proper kiss on the lips.
"Don't know what you're talking about Sergeant." Steve said, biting back a grin as he shrugged, stepping out of Bucky's arms.
"Now that is foul play." Bucky poked his side harshly, making Steve glare. Bucky laughed and wrapped his arm around Steve's shoulders, kissing the side of his head. "I'm stealing your room to change. I'm taking you out to celebrate. I found this...place. For people like us. No one really cares about relationships there, who you are or how you dress. I figured it would be nice since I'm leaving in a month..." He explained.
"So...A safe haven?" Steve clarified. He found the idea intriguing.
"Yes. In the form of a bar." Bucky grinned as he squeezed Steve's shoulder and left towards his room. Steve watched him go with a small smile. He honestly couldn't wait.
⌛️⌛️⌛️
Bucky was half way in doing up his blazer when he noticed Steve's notebook splayed out on his small bed. Bucky's curiosity got the better of him and he picked it up, sitting on the springy mattress. He looked upon the worn pages, flicking through softly. He found a pattern. Steve liked to name his best drawings.
'Bug boy', 'Stargazer', 'Soldier boy', 'Victory'. Bucky's personal favourite was the drawing of himself. The exact detail of the shape of his nose, the shine of his eyes, the upturn of his ladies-man smile. The shadowing made him seem more lively surprisingly, more alive yet not all at the same time. It was almost like looking a picture, the strong affect of his jaw and crinkle of his smile lines. He seemed to be in his uniform, his sculpted hands placing his cap on his head and shoulder pads standing out.
'Bucky Barnes: Sergeant Brooklyn.' It was named. Bucky gave a small noise of amusement. So Steve had wished him to be a Sergeant from the beginning. It had been Bucky's goal after all.
"You adorable dork." He said to himself as a knock came to the door. Bucky placed the notebook down back where Steve left it, standing and walking over with his cap in hand. "Yes?"
"Are you done changing?" Steve asked.
"Yeah." He opened the door. "You should get ready now." He went to walk out, but Steve's hand on his chest stopped him.
"You are not ready." He deadpanned.
"I have my uniform on." He rose a brow in confusion.
"You're disrespecting the uniform! You haven't buttoned it all up-"
"Chill Steve, it's just a uniform-"
"The way you wear your uniform defines how you are a soldier Buck, now stay still." Steve said firmly as he took Bucky's jacket, pulling it to straighten it before he finished buttoning the remaining buttons, right to the last one. Bucky watched him, biting back a humorous grin.
