The sky was darkening into night as it usually did at this time of night. Stars twinkled overhead and were the only light that lit the way. Odin trotted along on his majestic horse, his hands clutching tightly at the reins. He uttered some commands and the horse trotted forward.

Odin was on his way back to settle something that his guards had said they had overheard. It had been almost nothing and Odin was just anxious to return home to his wife and two sons. He knew that he would be home presently but that didn't stop him from from speeding up a bit.

Deep howls suddenly sounded through the land and Odin's horse reared on his hind legs. It bucked so hard that Odin nearly lost his grip and he fell backwards against the horse's haunch. Once the horse landed back on it's four legs Odin fell back against the horse's neck.

"Easy," chided Odin gently as he stroked the horse's mane. "It's just a wolf."

"I'm not sure you should call us 'just wolves'."

Odin looked over his shoulder and saw a large jet black wolf with red beady eyes. Wings were plastered against it's side and it pushed forward with precision. A growl rolled in his throat and his tail lashed to and fro as if it was deciding which part of Odin to eat first.

Odin narrowed his eyes. "What do you want Qutuk?"

Qutuk blinked his red eyes. "You know that my pack and I have helped you in battle numerous times."

"Yes I know Qutuk," Odin sighed curtly and he swung his leg over the side of his horse. He landed on the ground and looked down on Qutuk.

"Then now I have a favor to ask of you," Qutuk barked as he turned and lashed his tail. "Follow me."

Odin wasn't sure how much he trusted Qutuk but he knew that if he didn't listen then the wolf and his pack wouldn't provide support anymore in battle. He couldn't risk that. He reluctantly followed, his cape trailing behind him.

Qutuk led Odin toward a large den covered in shimmering crystals. He pushed himself in and Odin had to duck to fit into the den. He saw a low fire burning in the middle of the den. Past that he saw a small nest with two young pups laying in it. Their eyes weren't yet open and they pawed at the sky feebly.

Qutuk padded toward them and laid next to the pups. He licked each pup in turn and motioned for Odin to come near. Odin leaned down and sat beside Qutuk. He saw one wolf that was dark brown fur and a hint of light gray hues. He was much larger and fatter than his brother. He had a golden mark on the top of his head that looked like a lightning bold. The other pup was dark gray with a much leaner and weaker figure than his brother. He had a blue mark on his forehead that looked just like wisps. It had a bit of green mixed in and Odin wondered whether or not the pup could change the color at will. He also had small wings that were plastered against his side.

"What are their names," asked Odin as he stretched out a hand. Qutuk growled a bit before he relaxed and allowed Odin to run his hands through their fur.

Qutuk flicked his tail to the dark brown pup. "This is Morali. His name means Lightning in Wolf Latin because of that mark. He can also control the elements."

Odin stroked Morali between the ears. "I will never get used to you wolf and your wolf names."

Qutuk snorted. "And this is Aphron. His names means Illusionist in Wolf Latin."

"Illusionist," echoed Odin as he suppressed a shudder. That sounded a lot what his son could do. Was that a coincidence? "So why did you bring me here to see your sons?"

Qutuk let out a sigh of pain. "Because their mother and my mate d-died," choked Qutuk as he looked at his paws.

Odin stretched out a hand and rested it on Qutuk's shoulder. He had met Qutuk's mate, Phriler, many times before. She was beautiful and intelligent. He never imagined that she would pass. "I'm so sorry."

Qutuk rose to his paws and added more kindling to the fire. "There was a love for those pups in her that I could not explain," he murmured as the smoke rose out of a small hole in the den. "She died defending them from the Icers."

Odin narrowed his eyes at the mention of the dangerous dragons that normally attacked the wolves for fear that they would attack them. The wolves always lost pack members when the Icers attacked. "I promise we will try to bring an end to their attacks," Odin assured.

Qutuk just shrugged. "It won't bring Phriler back," he confessed heavily but he managed to shake his head to clear it. "As you know Phriler was a Wolvy, a wolf gifted with the power to fly. I believe that Aphron inherited that power. Morali inherited the Claw Wolf power and size of me."

"Sounds like my family," Odin murmured. "Thor gets his power from me and Loki gets his from his mother."

Qutuk shuffled his paws and he turned back to face the king of Asgard. "I wanted to ask you if you would take my sons."

Odin seemed a bit shocked. "But why when you are more than capable of taking care of them?"

Qutuk's red eyes darkened. "They are halfbreds. Half Claw Wolf and half Wolvy. If the pack would find out, I would be removed as alpha."

"So this is all about your rank," snapped Odin as he slammed a fist against the ground. "This is an outrage!"

"Calm down," snapped Qutuk as his tail lashed. "Phriler told me that if anything ever happened to her then she wanted you to raise them. She thought they would be perfects matches for your sons."

Odin thought for a second and realized that Phriler was right. His sons did deserve companions and this was a blessing. However he couldn't image taking pups who hadn't even opened their eyes away from the only family they had left.

"They are weaned and in a few days time they will open their eyes," informed Qutuk as he picked up each pup by the scruff and set them down in front of Odin. "They shouldn't cause you any trouble."

"I don't think they would." Odin lowered his hand and scratched Morali under the chin. He then patted Aphron's underbelly. "Are you sure about this Qutuk? If I take the pups you might never see them again and they won't remember that you are their father."

"I have prepared myself for this," barked Qutuk as he turned his head and picked up a few bones. He set them in front of Odin. They had been carved into by teeth. "Give them these once they get older."

Odin took the bones and stuffed them into his satchel. He then picked up the pups and they let out small yips. He pushed himself out of Qutuk's den and Qutuk followed. He watched as Odin mounted his horse and his eyes filled in tears.

"Good-bye my sons. I love you and one day you will understand why I did this!"
