"Father of the year?"

•••

America.

By the time Shawn and I got back to my house my father decided to show up. It ruined what could've been Shawn and I's first kiss. My dad hasn't been around lately but for some reason I was nervous to know what he thought. What would he even say?

I seen Shawn leave before I closed the door. I then turned around to see my dad leaning against the rail of the stairs. He didn't look angry, I couldn't actually tell what he felt.

"So who is he?" He asked finally breaking the silence.

I messed with my sweatshirt, "This boy I go to school with."

He looked at me and nodded his head, "He a good kid? Or do I need to chase him off?"

"Yes he's a good kid, kind of too good for me." I told him as I walked over to the kitchen.

I heard his footsteps follow behind me, I turned the light on and started to work on dinner.

"America don't say that." I heard my dad say with a sigh.

I shook my head, "Why? Because you're my dad and you have to say that?"

I grabbed all of the ingredients and set them by the pans. I was just going to make dinner for tonight and anything left over would be my dad's lunch.

"America I'm not saying that, I'm saying it because I know you. I know how big your heart is and you're very beautiful. If anyone is too good for someone it's you." He told me.

I looked at my dad and he had a smile on his face. One he hadn't had since my mom left. I looked at him and smiled back.

"Thank you dad." I told him.

He chuckled, "So with that being said I want to meet him."

My heart quickened, "What?" I asked.

"I want to meet him." He said again.

I shook my head and continued cooking, "Uh I don't think that's necessary, he's just a friend."

"Well great it's been a long time since you've had a friend over." He told me as he walked over to the fridge.

I leaned against the sink, "Dad it's really not that big of a deal."

"Don't be silly Mer, I'll even do my famous tacos." He said as he grabbed the beer from the fridge.

I studied what he was doing, I mean it wouldn't be odd if he got one. But that wasn't the case, he grabbed all of them out. He then did something so unexpected, he opened them up and dumped them in the sink.

Once he was done he looked at me and smiled, "I think it was time I stopped drinking and started being your dad again. What do you think Mer?"

I could feel tears pricking my eyes, it had been a while since I cried in front of him. In front of any family member for that fact. I always tried not to, to make them think nothing could hurt me.

I nodded my head, "Yeah I've missed him."

"Me too." He said as he walked over and gave me a hug.

That's when I cried, I let my tears flow onto his shirt. I'm not entirely sure where this change came from but I was happy. With what's been happening lately I needed my dad.

"Hey no more crying okay?" He asked as he wiped my tears away.

I nodded and smiled, "Yeah."

He then threw away the empty bottles before rolling up his sleeves. He washed his hands before standing next to me.

"Okay so what do you need help with?" He asked.

I smiled before instructing him on what to do. We spent that time talking and laughing, really reminiscing in the old times. I forgot what it was like to be this close and comfortable with my dad again.

We had dinner and just spent the rest of the night together. After we were done he said goodnight to me and for the first time I didn't dread sleep.

I felt at home.
