Lexianne and I fall asleep in each other's embrace. The events of the past weeks lodged in our minds. We both have a lot on our mind, but we manage to get some rest. We are woken up by a loud knocking at the door. We both sit up and glance at each other, then at the bedroom door.
Three more loud bangs at the door "Open up it's Detective Johnson with the BPD!" We hear the detectives voice pierce through the bedroom door. Not the first sound I wanted to hear this morning. I look at Lexi and put my finger to my lips, motioning for her to be quiet.
We sit in silence hoping for the detective to just leave, or assume that no one is home. We hold absolutely still and listen to the detective beat on the door. He continues for a short while, then stops. I let out a sigh and Lexi leans back in bed. Just then my phone goes off.
I quickly pick it up and silence it. I reconise the number from last night, it was the number on the detectives card. Clever jerk. I set it back down on the end table and stare at the door again.
"Open up! I know you are in there!" The detective yells through the door. Lexi and I hop out of bed and hurry to get dressed. I throw on some pants and a t-shirt. I grab Lexi's hand and we walk to the front door together.
Of all the people I thought I'd have to deal with this morning, Read was on the bottom of the list. I trudge to the door fuming, and dragging Lexi behind me. We get to the door and Lexi grabs my arm. I pull the door open and give a blank stare at the detective.
"Good morning detective! Might I just say that your voice is sweeter than bird song this morning." Lexi squeezes my arm tightly but I ignore her and continue to pester Read. "What can I help you with this early in the morning officer?" I give him a smug smile and feel Lexi's eyes on the back of my head.
I ignore her and relish in the detectives irritated facial expressions. "It's detective.". He says squinting at me. "Excuse us Detective, we just woke up.". Lexi speaks up and shoots me a look, but I'm done yet.
"I have a few more questions for you." A small chill runs down my spine, but I manage to keep my cool. I lock eyes with the detective and give him a smug grin. "May I come in?" He says, speaking directly to Lexi. I chuckled quietly, I can tell I am getting to him.
"Sure! Come in detective! Make yourself at home." I say thinking of something that would push him over the edge. He gives me a curious look, but takes a step into the apartment. "...Just make sure you leave your shoes at the door."
The detective gives me the dirtiest look ever and goes to take another step. "House rules." I shrug and motion to Lexi, trying not to laugh. The detective sighs uncomfortablely and begins untying his shoes. "I didn't have to do this the last time I was here." He says irritated. I quickly answer his question. "Well you know how they are." I brace myself and sure enough Lexi punches me in the arm. I chuckle a little.
The detective stands up with his shoes off and Lexi leads him to the kitchen table. I follow shortly behind. I suddenly stop and begin laughing loudly. The detective and Lexi stop and they both give me upset looks. I choke my words through laughs. "Nice socks detective!" I laugh at my own joke manically and the detective let's out what can only be described as a growl. Lexi looks worried
