The ride home was long and quiet. Neither of us said a word and we hardly looked at each other. She focused on driving, and I focused on anything other than the obvious. Was I scared of her now? I felt like it, everytime she moved I felt like it was going to be the last thing I ever saw. Why? She is the same, small, curly haired girl that I have always known. The one I fell in love with.
Somehow... knowing this side of her, it changed how I think of her. It seems unfair to her, she hasn't changed. She is the same person that she has always been. I didn't want to hold it against her. I might have been crazy, being unbiased to a murderer, but she was also my girlfriend, and I care about how she feels. When we finally got back to the apartment it was late Sunday morning, and I was exhausted.
But you never really know how vulnerable you feel with your eyes closed until you have to try and go to sleep laying next to a killer. I eventually did fall asleep and I woke up that evening, and Lexi wasn't laying next to me anymore.
I checked everywhere in the room cautiously, worried she might be looking to tie up some lose ends. I slowly opened the door to the living room, and looked around. That's when another terrifying thought struck me. What if she wasn't home, and was out killing?I tried hard not to shake at the thought. I walked into the living room and saw that she clearly wasn't in there. I peeked into the kitchen. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I nearly jumped out of my skin! The sound was so loud and ear piercing. I ducked back behind the living room wall. "Oh, I'm sorry babe. Did I wake you?" I slowly peeked my head around the corner, half expecting to see a body lying on our kitchen table.
But all that's there is Lexi, a tea kettle and a cup in her hand. "Come on sleepy head, my turn to question you. Sit.". She smiled at me and patted the chair. I come into the room and sit down. She had made me tea, and a bowl of oatmeal, which I ate gratefully. I had forgotten to eat for a whole day.
She smiles knowingly and kisses my cheek while I eat. "So how are you dealing with all this Luke? I know this is a lot to take in"
"I'm fine, I think, I've thought about it..."
"And?"
"I'm with you princess."
"Used that nickname before, I like it."
"Well things are a little different now... you psycho, haha"
"Thank you Luke, this means a lot."
"Yeah, well please just don't make me regret it."
"I won't, and Luke..."
"Yeah?"
"I promise I won't ever hurt you."
"I know."
She rests her head on my shoulder while I finish eating. I lean into her. "I do have some ground rules though, my little serial killer." I say half jokingly. She laughs. "You know you are just as crazy as me?". She says, giggling. "I know, so do you think you can control yourself? For me?" I say hopeful. "Yeah, yes I do."
