Lexi and Read talked for about an hour. After my behavior this morning I figured it would be best if I didn't sit in on their conversation so I spent the morning in my bedroom texting my best friend Jacob Riley.
___________________________________________-(Hey Jake)
(Hey Luke, what's up?)--(Not much buddy, wbu?)
(Same, not much, how's Lexi?)-
-(She's ok, not great, she's been having some...personal problems lately.)
(That sucks, you guys ok?)-
-(Yeah, we are better than ever actually. I just have to help her get through some things.)
( Well good luck dude. You two are perfect together. )-
-(Thanks. How's work?)
(It's good. I can't release much info right now, but your field may be getting an upgrade ;). )-
-(Oh really? You know, you guys up at R&D are so secretive.)
(Well, research and development is a hard field to work in, and releasing information early just makes it so much harder. )-
-(Hmmm... interesting... You big nerd!)
(Hey! I'm pretty cool! Sometimes! XD)-
-(XD. I think they are done Jake, I gotta go, I'll text you later.)
(Ok, see ya.)-
_____________________________________________I hear the door shut and Lexi walks into the bedroom. "What was that?!" She says. "What was what?" "You know what I'm talking about!" She was really upset and I started to feel bad. "Well that guy is a douchebag, he deserved it!" "Luke he was aggregated enough before you messed with him! I really don't appreciate you acting like that, whatever your problem with him is it isn't fair for you to take it out on me... because it isn't your life on the line here!"
I finally understood why Lexi was so on edge around this guy, and why she had seemed so bothered lately, she was taking him seriously. "Baby, I'm sorry." I frown and Lower my gaze. "I didn't know that you were that worried about this, I thought you said you said the couldn't tie you to anything." I frown at her. "They can't, nothing that I did anyway." She says frankly. "What's that supposed to mean?" I say. "Luke I think I'm being set up."
"Baby what is this all about?" I ask.
"Gregory Lane..."
"Like...the NetCo CEO Gregory Lane?"
"Yeah... he's dead."
"What!?!"
"And as much as this detective seems to like to visit us, I think I am a suspect."
"Baby, did you?..."
"No! No...you don't believe me?"
"I do...I do, I believe you. So what do we do?"
"I don't know yet. The detective is being irritatingly tight lipped about this whole thing. The name was all I could get out of him today."
"Hmmm."
"Of course it would have been a lot easier if he was in a better mood and someone hadn't spent all morning antagonizing him!"
"I'm sorry Lexi, I don't like it...but I'll leave him alone."
"Thank you baby. I know you don't, but I need him on my side when whatever is going to happen, happens. Understand?"
"Yes. Lexi?"
"Yep?"
"I'm not going to let you go." I give her a serious look and she smiles. She gives me a hug and sighs, she goes into our bedroom and I follow her. I sit on the bed and she goes across the room to our computer, she boots it up and the screens lights up, illuminating her soft facial features.
She opens a browser and types quickly in the search box. She hums quietly and and clicks several links. She squints at the screen and I step up and put my hands on her shoulders and gently massage her. "Easy there old lady. You need your reading glasses?" She looks straight up at me and then smiles and shakes her head. "You are so lame." She says.
I rub her back and watch the screen. She was researching Gregory Lane and the company of NetCo. "Baby you know I work there right? Anything you need to know I can tell you." I say trying to be helpful. "Thanks boo, but I think this goes above your head." She says. She keeps browsing through several websites and then stops. She turns in her chair and points at the screen. "See? There's nothing. Not one mention of his death, not anywhere. I don't know how they kept it under wraps so well." She says giving me a confused look.
I stare at the screen and flip through some tabs. "Hmm, that is strange." I reply. She looks stressed and I wish I could help her. "This is a high profile murder, if I get pinned on this, I'm dead." She says deeply. I grab her shoulders and look her in the eyes. "Hey, hey baby. That isn't going to happen, we are going to get through this. I promise." I say reassuringly.
I hug her and try not to seem worried, but the thought wouldn't leave my head. I could lose her. After all this, I could lose Lexi. I can't let that happen.
