The Unexpected Couple

Chapter Nine

The rest of the day flies by and it's time for soccer again. I grab all of my stuff quickly and make it outside without having to worry about being late. I slide my shinguards into the sleeves and lace up my cleats before standing and brushing the dirt off my shorts. I look around for someone I know and see the girl Audrey is doing her project with, I think her name is Morgan.

I walk up to her and tap her shoulder. She turns and smiles at me and I smile back.

"Hey." I say. "I'm Rain."

"I know! I'm Morgan." She says.

"Morgannnnnn!!!!" I hear a male voice call. I turn and see a boy with dirty blonde hair held back by a red bandana walking towards us.

"Ashton!" Morgan says meeting him halfway with a hug. "This is Rain Ashford. Rain this is Ashton Irwin."

Ashton laughs. "Your last name sounds like my first name." He says and I smile.

"Yeah I guess it does." I say. He walks up and hugs me and I stiffen a bit. He chuckles and I relax. The whistle blows and he pulls away from me. We all jog to the coaches in the center and they explain what the plans for the day are. We stretch and then start with conditioning.

The girls get to watch the guys run first. While my eyes drift from Liam to Ashton Morgan's eyes stay on one boy. His hair is dark the same with his eyes and I can see tattoos peeking out from under his tank top. I nudge her with her elbow and she shakes her head slightly and turns to look at me.

"What?" She questions.

I raise my eyebrow at her. "Who's the guy you're drooling over?" I ask. Her eyes widen.

"You saw that?"

"I think he saw that, you were staring for a long long long time."

She sighs heavily. "That's Calum Hood. I've had the biggest crush on him since 7th grade but he doesn't even know I exist."

"Oh I'm sure he does."

She shakes her head. I smirk. "You should talk to him. I mean you're both at soccer tryouts you already have things in common! And he's hot too."

"I don't have that much confidence." She says and the whistle blows for the girls run. I smile at her and grasp her hand helping her up.

"I got your back." I say winking at her.

We actually touch a ball this practice doing small sided games mixing the boys and girls together. We get out in groups of four and I get put in a group with Ashton and Liam but Morgan and Calum are in different groups.

I stay with Ashton the whole time avoiding Liam. Practice ends and while I am packing up my things I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn on my heel and come face to face with Ashton.

"Well hi there." I say laughing. He cracks a smile as well.

"Can I- um. Can I have your number? You know to keep in touch?" He says nervously scratching the back of his neck. I laugh.

"Of course can you give it to Morgan and tell her to text me as well?" I say and he nods. "Come on" I say and start walking towards my car. He follows behind me and has the same reaction to my car as everyone else.

"Holy shit." He says.

"I don't understand why this is such a big deal." I say. He chuckles and I pull out my phone and hand it to him and he hands me his. We exchange numbers and he gives me a hug and walks to his own car. I slide into mine and drive home.

I park my car in the garage next to my mom's car narrowing my eyes slightly. She's never home this early. I walk inside and immediately smell food.

"Hi sweetie." My mom says.

"Hey." I answer her. I sit down at one of the barstools at the island looking at her. "What's with all the food?" I ask.

"There's a luncheon tomorrow for your father and his colleagues. I told him if make some food." I nod.

"Okay. Do I get any?" I ask teasingly. She glares at me over her shoulder and I laugh.

"Oh I almost forgot to tell you. There's a banquet in about a month that we are hosting and you'll need a chaperone." She says. I nod as my phone starts to ring. I answer it without looking at the caller I.D..

"Hello?" I say.

"Hey there." A voice says. I pull the phone away from my ear quickly looking at the screen.

Liam.
