The Unexpected Couple

Chapter Seventeen

"Starbucks?" I ask Audrey, holding a cup in her direction, as I meet her at the front doors of the school the next morning. She sighs but then takes the cup from my hand.

'Thanks." She mumbles and I turn my head to hers.

"Alright. What's wrong?" I ask and she makes eye contact with me but looks away quickly. She moves over to the lockers on the side of the hallway, leaning against one.

"Niall has been hanging out with Kacee again." She says with a defeated look in her eyes.

"Oh." I start. I walk over to her putting both of my hands on her shoulders. "It's probably not what you trying I'm sure he has an explanation." I try and reason with her.

"He better have a good one." She says. I see the doors open in my peripheral vision and immediately snap my head to the door seeing none other than Kacee and Niall walk through the door. They both have smiles on their faces and Kacee is standing closer than necessary to him.

I hear Audrey groan from beside me and I look at her and chuckle then look back to Niall and Kacee. When I look at Niall his eyes are locked on Audrey and he starts to walk in her direction.

"Hey babe." He says going in for a kiss on the lips. However, Audrey turns her head so he ends up kissing her cheek instead. He pulls away and gives her a confused look which she returns with a glare. "What's wrong?" He asks and her eyes snap to Kacee and stay there.

Niall turns to look at her and then his eyes widen. "Wait it's not-" He starts.

"Yeah it's not what it looks like. Been there done that Niall. I don't want to hear it. I thought I could trust you!" She starts to rant. I put one of my hands on her shoulder and she visibly relaxes a little bit.

"Can I at least try to explain?" He says. She breaths heavily but nods putting her back against the lockers and sliding down so she was sitting on the floor. Niall looks down at her confused for a moment before sitting directly in front of her. He grasps her smaller hands in his bigger ones but she pulls hers away quickly. His head drops and he sighs before starting his explanation.

"We're going to be step-siblings." He says.

Audrey's head snaps up and I feel my eyes go wide. "Wait what!?" We both ask at the same time. Niall nods is head and I look over to Kacee who's head is dipped towards the ground, cheeks red.

"Yeah. You know how my mum is well..." Niall starts trailing off when he talks about his dad.

Everyone knows that Niall's mum isn't here anymore. I wasn't living in the town when it happened but it is still the talk of the town. A car drove straight into theirs on a one way street. Niall was in the car and survived but his mom was a different story.

"Yes I know. You can go on." Audrey says.

"Well apparently my dad has been seeing Kacee's mum behind our backs. She didn't know either but they broke the news to us right before the school year started. I wasn't flirting with her or cheating on you. I was just trying to get to know her." He finishes.

He lifts his eyes from the floor to look at Audrey who's eyes and head have assumed the position Niall's were just in.

"I'm sorry." She sniffles.

"Huh?" Niall says putting his thumb and forefinger under her chin to lift her face from it's current position. When her face is visible to the rest of us we all see that her eyes are brimmed with tears and as she blinks one trails down her cheek.

"I'm sorry. For not trusting you." She apologizes.

"Shhh babe it's alright it look suspicious I get it." He says. He uses the pad of his thumb to gently wipe the tear from her cheek before kissing the wet spot and pulling her in for a hug. I smile at the situation going on in from of me before turning to Kacee. I nod at her and she flashes me a small smile. I turn on my heel and make my way through the hall, trying to find Liam.

I feel a tap on my shoulder and I turn my head to come face to face with Morgan and Calum.

"Hey lovebirds!" I tease. Morgan rolls her eyes but still smiles, snuggling further into Calum's side.

"Have you talked to him yet?" She asks and I shake my head no.

"Can't find him." I say. As soon as I had made my desk ion I had texted Morgan and she supported it and offered to help as much as possible.

"Who's him?" Calum asks and I look at him.

"Liam." I say. "Have you seen him?"

"Not this morning but I would check the music room if I were you." He says. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion at his comment.

"Why the music room?" I ask confused.

"Liam had a side to him that you haven't met yet." He says with a smirk. He intertwines Morgan and his hands before walking away. I sigh heavily glaring at his back infuriated at him for being so vague.

I push my way through the students to the music room. I open the door and Liam is sitting in a chair, with a notebook open in front of him, a guitar in his lap, and a pencil in his mouth. I quickly debate interrupting him or letting him to on with what he was doing.

I sit down in one of the chairs near the back of the room waiting for Liam to realize I'm there or to start playing again. When he opens his mouth to sing I hold my breath.

"Oh won't you stay with me?

'Cause you're all I need

This ain't love it's clear to see

But darling, stay with me"

When he stops singing to write something in the notebook in front of him I let out a big breath that I didn't know I was holding. His head snaps in my direction and his eyes grow wide.

"What are you doing in here?" He says frantically closing the notebook and setting the guitar to the side. I smile at his embarrassment but then start to clap. He immediately stops what he is doing snapping his eyes to mine. "What?" He says.

"You were amazing." I say smiling. He narrows his eyes for a moment but then smiles with me.

"Thanks I guess." He says. A silence encompasses us and I break eye contact. He pulls out his phone and I'm ready to say good-bye and leave but before I can he speaks again. "Do you want to skip with me?" He asks looking me directly in the eyes.

"Uh I c-can't. I have a t-test" I stutter.

He narrows his eyes before laughing at me. "You've never skipped have you?" He asks like it's obvious. I look away from him feeling my cheeks heat. He grasps my hand in his giving me a small smile. "It'll be fine. But we're taking your car." He jokes. I laugh and nod letting him drag me out of the school.
