Taylor's POV
I was sitting at the island counter talking to Adam whilst he prepared breakfast. He smiles at me, a cheeky edge to it.
"Why are you smiling like that?" I laugh. He shakes his head and puts down the bowl in which he was making the pancake mixture in. He leans over the counter and places a kiss on my lips.
"Just admiring how truly beautiful you are." He says under his breath. We kiss again but this time we kiss much deeper. It's full of passion and Adam leans further over the counter, his right hand positioned on the back of my neck. I grab at Adam's shirt and pull him closer. The liquid filled bowl in between us falls and spills over, causing Adam and I to break apart our kiss and erupt into a fit of laughter.
"That's your fault, so you're cleaning it up." He says to me, walking around the counter and towards the stairs. "I'll go wake Leah."
I hear his footsteps as he jogs up the stairs two at a time. The sound of each step resonates in the house and I'm left standing in the kitchen. Whilst Adam is upstairs waking our daughter, I start making a new bowl full of pancake picture.
Soon I hear a fit of giggles. I watch Adam come racing in with Leah propped on his shoulders. "Faster horsie!" She exclaims. I'm a little alarmed at the speed Adam ran down the stairs at and ask Adam to get Leah down from his shoulders, that she had ridden her horsie enough for today.
I pour enough liquid into the pan to make a pancake and begin to cook it.
"g'mornin mommy." Leah says sweetly, holding onto her father's neck as he lowers her onto his hip.
"Good morning princess." I reply. I open up the cutlery drawer but the spatula doesn't seem to be there. Confused as to where it is, I scour the kitchen in search of it. "Have any of you seen the spatula?"
"Spongee-bob!"
"What's that Leah?" I ask. The little bundle of energy good down onto the floor sprints to the stairs. She heaves herself up each step, her legs still being too short to walk up properly. Soon enough she returns with the spatula in hand.
"Spa-soo--la!" She cheers, handing me the metal utensil. I laugh and rub her head.
"And why exactly did you have this, little missy?"
"I was bein' spongee-bob!" I shake my head and Adam bursts into laughter. She really is a cute little kid.
I love over to the sink to quickly wash it. As I turn around, I realise how stupid I'd been. "Fuck." I say as I turn off the gas and empty the now burnt pancake into the bin. Leah gasps at the bad word, having already been told by me to not repeat the word she had previously heard her daddy use.
It isn't long before another pancake is in the pan cooking.
"Reckon I can flip the pancake?" I ask.
"No chance." Adam says. I glare at him, taking on the challenge.
"And if I do?"
"You can post whatever you want about me online."
"Deal."
I pick the small black pan off the stove and hold it firmly in my right hand. Easily I toss the pancake into the air so it flips and lands perfectly back into the pan. I stick my tongue out laughing as Adam realises he had just lost the small bet we had made.
"You underestimate my abilities, Mr." I say, still laughing whilst placing the now golden pancake onto a plate.
"How about this, if I do it too then I don't have to have something embarrassing posted by my girlfriend online for all of the world to see?" Adam gambles, making me start to laugh.
"Fine, I'd like to you try." I say. Adam pours some mixture into the pan whilst I serve Leah the already cooked pancake.
"Would you like some maple syrup, honey?"
"What's dat?"
"It's a sweet and yummy syrup which is really nice on pancakes. Do you want to get it?" Leah nods and I squirt a little out the bottle. I cut her pancake into small pieces and hand her a plastic fork. "There you go, baby" I say, kissing her forehead.
"Are you ready to watch me flip this pancake or what?" Adam says, pan in his hand. I nod and watch as he throws the pancake into the air...along with the pan. I watch as it turns in the air before hitting the kitchen floor, making a very loud noise. This loud noise is then immediately followed by Leah's loud cries. Her hands are pressed firmly against our ears and her eyes are shut tight.
"NO! TOO LOUD!" She screams. Her piercing wails fill the room and I scoop her into my arms. I bounce her whilst walking slowly in circles.
"You're okay, baby." I reassured her, softly, into her ear. "You don't like loud noises, hmm?" I hummed as I rubbed her back. I could feel her shake her head against my chest.
"Loud n-noises do b-b-bad things, m-mommy." She managed to say in the midst of her crying.
Then it hit me.
No.
Was it?
Could it be?
No.
For now I had to focus on calming my toddler down rather than on the words she had just spoken.
Loud noises do bad things
The statement echoed in my mind. It was like a voice was repeating it over and over again and the voice was getting louder and louder. I made a mental note to talk to Adam later.
I kept one hand wrapped around Leah, holding her tightly against me. The other hand moved up to my head, which was now pounding painfully.
"Adam..." I said, quite softly, feeling the energy drain out of me.
"Adam." I said a little louder.
And that's when I fell into darkness.
