Hugging the virtual ground below, I turned my head to the side so that my once captor could hear. "Never. Do that. Again."
"MY APPOLIGIES. I DID NOT MEAN TO FRIGHTEN THEE."
"Yeah, well. Thy mind-ith is now scared shitless-ith because of you. Next time just give me a little heads up, okay?"
"IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WISH."
"Thank you." I huffed as I attempted to get up. Unbeknownst to me, a third conduit from my little "family" was slowly approaching behind me, their grin mischievous as ever as they leaned down next to my ear before whispering. "Guess who?"
My mind hardly had time to register the voice before I spun around and punched the figure in the face with a screech. It wasn't until the person had fallen to the ground did my exhausted mind manage to comprehend the situation.
"Delsin?!" I asked skeptically as the man held his bleeding nose. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
The man groaned as he stood up. Thank god for conduits being fast healers or else that nose of his would have definitely been broken.
"What the hell am I doing? Just what the hell are you doing, Bella?! Jesus woman...."
Crossing my arms, I stared down the man. "Okay. First off, don't call me woman or I'm gonna break more than just your nose. Secondly, why the hell did Eugene have to scare me half to death if you were just going to tag along anyways?"
The smoke conduit opened his mouth to speak but I quickly cut him off. "And don't say, 'because it was funny!'"
"Alright, alright." Delsin shook his head while raising his hands in mock surrender. "I wasn't because it was funny."
I raised a questioning brow at him, knowing very well that that wasn't the end of it. Smirking, Delsin looked directly into my green eyes with his own mischievous brown ones. "I did it because it was hilarious-Omf!"
A light punch to the stomach immediately silenced the man as I took a step back to examine his now slightly hunched over form. "I should just hit you again...." I mumbled to myself.
"Hit me?!" Delsin looked up at me in shock. "Just what the fuck do you call that?!"
"A closed hand slap."
"I thought you loved me...."
"Yeah, well. Love hurts."
"SILENCE!" The renewed voice of He Who Dwells sounded. "THY PETY QUARREL AMUSES ME NO LONGER! IT IS TIME, MY FELLOW WARRIORS, TO BEGIN WHAT WE SOUGHT OUT FOR!"
Tensing up at the loud volume, I nervously nodded my head whereas Delsin simply rolled his eyes at his companion.
"Ya know. It'd be a hell of a lot easier to understand you without the medieval talk, man."
Ignoring his comment, the large figure turned to me. "ARE YOU READY, YOUNG MAIDEN?" At first, I remained still, a bit unsure about the fact myself. Deciding that it'd be best to get it done and over with, I hesitantly nodded my head. "THEN GO. FOLLOW THE ANGELS AND FEAR NOT. SHOULD ANYTHING HAPPEN, MY MINIONS WILL ATTEND TO THEE. JUST GIVE THEM THY ORDER AND THEY SHALL OBEY."
Below us, the ground began to rumble and despite the fact that we were hovering above it, the platform violently trembled before an explosion sounded next to us. As the ground became stable once more, I turned in the direction of the sound only to find that several small, red hot platforms had bubbled up from the lava below and were now levitating above it. Each platform was small and circular, barely providing enough room for a single person to walk across before leading to the next. Further down the makeshift pathway, I could see the light blue glow of two winged creatures whom I could only assume to be the angels.
"Well, guess this is it." Taking a deep breath, I stepped onto the first platform. Immediately, the vibrant blue lights drifted further and further down the path, indicating that I should follow them. Behind me I could hear fast approaching footsteps before a hand wrapped around my wrist.
"Whoa. Just wait." The concern and worry was clear in Delsin's voice. "You don't have to do this, Bella. At least not alone."
Gently prying free of his hold, I took another step forward. Again, Delsin reached for me but this time I stopped him.
"Delsin." My voice was soft and quiet, yet still maintained a seriousness to it. "Why did you come to Seattle?"
Taken aback by my words, Delsin's outstretched hand froze just inches away from my own. "Wha-You know why."
"Yes, but why did you come?" Turning around, I gazed into my fellow conduit's eyes with my own determined green ones. "Surely Reggie has some connections here. Couldn't they help you get to Augustine faster? Why do you insist on doing the job alone?"
"....Because....it's my responsibility, not Reggie's."
"Exactly." Turning back around, I attempted to hide my growing nervousness. "And this. This is my responsibility." Without another word, I set off down the pathway, leaving behind the one person I cared most for while nearing the opposite; the one I feared.
