Scott stopped breathing as he leaned back up, slowly but surely moving Athena's body back to the floor.
The 18-year-old stood up slowly, his legs giving out on him the moment he stood up. On instinct, the guilt stricken boy steadied himself on his dining room table, which now had several bullet holes through them.
"Oh, my god." He mumbled, looking down at his shaking hands. He found the strength to stand up on his own, and began walking away from his kitchen and into his living room, where he leaned his back against the wall.
His body slowly sank to the ground, and a sob racked through his body. He just his best friend. Scott McCall felt totally useless.
He had lost Allison, he had lost Aiden, and now he's lost Athena. All because he didn't know how to be a good alpha, or even a good friend. He had the chance to give Athena more time. More time to live her life and do the things she had told Scott about over coffee and waffles at the local diner at midnight.
She told him she had always wanted to go to Norway and learn about her mother's side of the family, or how she's always wanted to go see Rome, and how she's dreamt of swimming in the Indian Ocean. She would never get to experience those things.
Scott sniffed, reaching up and rubbing his nose with his hands, which were covered in a mix of fresh and dry blood. The boy leaned his head against the wall, and reached down to pull his phone from his pocket.
Shaky hands began to type in Chris Argents phone number, his heart beat pounding against his ears.
His finger hovered over the call button, but stopped when he realized something.
It wasn't his heart beat he was hearing in his ears. The boy's body scrambled up off the ground and turned the corner.
There, standing in his dining room, leaning against the table with their back to him, was Athena. Covered in her own blood, but alive.
At the sound of something behind her, the girl slowly turned around, Scott's breath catching in his throat at the flash of bright yellow in her eyes.
"Athena?"
"Scott?" The girl said weakly, slowly looking down at her blood-soaked clothing "What-What happened?" She choked, looking around the room. Scott couldn't answer, though, he was frozen in shock. "Scott?" She repeated, sternly and louder this time,
Scott snapped out of it and moved his hand from the wall and moving forwards, "Oh, my god. Athena." He mumbled, engulfing her in a hug.
Athena was quick to push the boy away from her. "What did you do?" She said, the tone of her voice angry, in contrast to the scared an confused tone she had several seconds ago. Her voice cracked at the end, and Scott sighed, reaching out for her. Athena took a step back out of his reach.
"I-I had to. You were dying." Scott whispered, and Athena scoffed. "Scott, that wasn't your-" Athena choked back a sob, placing her hands on her stomach and turning around, her back facing him, "That wasn't your decision to make. I said no. I can't do this." She turned around, Scott gulping when he caught sight of her bright yellow eyes, a big change from her normally chocolate brown ones.
"Athena-" "No, Scott. I wanted to die human." Athena said, her voice raising.
"Athena I had no choice."
"You always have a choice. Liam was an exception. He wasn't ready to die. I've been ready to die since the day I learned I was a hunter. You had a choice." Athena was in front of Scott now, and his eyes softened when he saw the tears that were slowly falling down her red, and slightly bloody, cheeks. "You made the choice to stay in Beacon Hills instead of leaving, like you promised your dad. You made the choice to sneak into a armed hunters base. You make your own choices. I had made my choice, and you took that opportunity away from me." Athena said, taking steps away from him.
Without thinking before he spoke, Scott sucked in a breath, "Don't you get it Athena! Allison is dead because of me! I could have saved her! I could have bit her, but I couldn't make myself do it because I was scared. And now she's dead. And I wasn't gonna let you die too." Scott gasped, "Im' sorry-"
Athena's breath hitched in her throat, and she stumbled back. "I hate you." She mumbled out, and Scott's eyes widened. "You don't mean that-"
"I hate you so much. And you're not my friend."
Athena quickly pushed past Scott, jogging to the door of his house and running to her own car. Pulling the keys from her pocket, she struggled to get the key into her door. "Athena, please." Scott said, walking out and towards her. A sob escaped Athena's throat when she finally unlocked her car.
Getting in, she locked it and turned on the ignition. "Athena." Scott's muffled voice came from outside the passengers door, "Athena please. Stop and listen to me."
"Go away." She said, putting the car into drive and quickly driving away.
