"Just buy us more time. Wherever Liam and the others are, get them out of there, quickly." Athena spoke into the phone, her body resting against the wall of the clinic. "Am I buying you guys time to come up with a plan or to get help?" Theo said, and Athena sucked in a breath, placing her thumbnail in between her teeth.
"Um, I don't know, a bit of both, maybe." Athena said, but it sounded more like a question, which made Theo worry. "Be careful, Athena." Theo mumbled, and Athena nodded, her eyes trained on Stiles, who stood talking to Scott. "No promises, Raeken." Athena said before pressing the end call button, her eyes still not removed from the spastic brown haired boy in the corner.
Athena walked into the back room, where Derek, Lydia, Malia, Scott and Stiles were gathered around the metal table.
"So, what the hell?" Malia asked, her question directed towards Stiles.
"Okay, It was literally, day one of my internship and up comes a slide of a guy that they've been chasing in the woods in North Carolina." Stiles spoke, and Athena interrupted him with furrowed eyebrows, looking at Derek, "I thought you were in South America?"
"I was, the bodies of the werewolves I told you about? They blamed me." Derek answered, crossing his arms.
"So I learned that the FBI has cornered this feral mass-murdering unsub-" "I found, a group of hunters gathering in a meeting place. I was trying to get information." Derek interrupted Stiles, making the boy roll his eyes, "Well the FBI found out about it too, and they were planning a SWAT assault to take him down. Dead or alive. And, as we all know thought, with Derek, it's preferably dead." Athena snickered, and her older friend glared at her before raising his eyebrows in agreement, "Preferably."
"So I convinced them to take me on the Field Op."
"You convinced the FBI to bring an intern onto an extremely dangerous field operation?" Lydia asked, and Athena raised an eyebrow at the boy.
"I'm surprised he didn't convince them he could lead it." Derek said, making Athena snicker again; she missed Derek.
"I tried. Didn't work. Anyway, long story short, I basically, you know, had to save his life."
"That's not how it happened," Derek argued, and Athena raised an eyebrow again.
"Yeah, I may have left out a detail, but that's a gist of what happened. It was the essential essence of it." Stiles said, and Derek shook his head, making Athena look up at the older boy beside her. "You couldn't walk."
"I was limping."
"You couldn't walk and I know that because I was carrying you." Athena chuckled at their familiar bickering, the girl almost missed it. Almost.
"They shot me toe. You want to see it? My toe was caught in the crossfire. It was obliterated." Athena winced at the visual picture in her head of his toe being shot off, the idea making her shiver. She liked her toes. She didn't want to lose them.
"Okay, forget your toe." Lydia interrupted. "Obliterated," Stiles whispered.
"Guys, it's not just hunters. We've got another problem." Scott said, and Athena nodded, leaning against the metal table.
"It's called the Anuk-ite." Athena said, making Scott nod. "It can get in your head. It can make you see things."
"What does it look like?" Stiles put his hands on his waist.
"It used to look like two ordinary people. But, then they somehow merged. All we know is that it's made of two faces. One human, the other supernatural." Athena said.
"And it's a shape shifter. Like us." Scott looked between Malia, Athena and Derek. "But it knows what you're afraid of. What you fear most."
"And now it can kill you by just looking at you." Malia added.
"Okay, so you're telling me we gotta go up against this thing blind? And face our deepest fear?" Stiles said with a sigh. Athena furrowed her eyebrows, "Yeah. Why? What do you fear most?" She asked.
"Blindness." He stated bluntly, making Athena sigh, "Convenient."
"Becoming blind?" Derek asked, probably to reassure that he heard correct.
"Yeah, terrified of it. Always have been. This just seems to be a situation of unfortunate overlap."
"Lydia. You and Stiles need to find Argent, get to the Armory, rescue Jackson." Scott said, Athena's eyes flicking to the strawberry blonde standing next to her. "I don't think we have time to wait for him. I've gotten through those doors once, anyway. I can do it again." Lydia said to Scott.
"Can we slow it down just for one second, make sure I'm grasping this?" Stiles interrupted, and Athena looked over at him. "So we're actually talking about doing this? We're gonna do exactly what Gerard wants us to do? Is that right?"
"I think that if we stop the Aku-ite, we stop it all." Scott said, and Athena sighed.
"Stopping this thing can stop Gerard and the hunters?" Derek asked, and Athena looked up at him. "Not all of them are hunters." Athena and Scott said at the same time.
"No, she's right. Most of them are ordinary people acting out of fear." Lydia agreed with Athena and Scott.
"Monroe's not gonna change." Scott said, and Athena shook her head, "And neither is Gerard." She said.
"But I think we can reach the others. Most of them, actually."
"The Anuk-ite is causing them to come from a place of fear." Lydia said.
"Well, fears pretty motivating. Especially when it leads to anger." Athena looked up at the older boy next to her as he spoke.
"And I think that if we can take out the fear, we can take out the fight in them too. They're afraid of us, but they don't have to be. They just have to change their minds." Scott said, and Derek nodded.
"Well we have to change their minds." Derek said, and Athena sucked in a breath. "Us. The exact werewolves that they're scared of. I don't think we'll be able to get 10 feet from someone without being shot." Athena stated. Stiles pointed at Athena in agreement, but Lydia sent her a look that screamed 'be quiet'.
"Okay, we can face the Anuk-ite. We can try to fight it blind. We can try to face our fears. But we still don't know how to catch it." She argued.
"We'll figure that out like we always do." Scott reassured his friend.
"Well, it's nice to see that somebody hasn't lost their optimism." Derek said, making Athena snicker.
"Not yet."
"I have." Stiles mumbled, and Lydia rolled her eyes. "We will buy you time, Scott. Who knows? Maybe Jackson has an answer."
"Maybe Argent will come back with one." Malia said, and Scott nodded.
"You three. You're with me." Scott said to Malia, Athena and Derek, who all nodded. "And we need Peter." Athena groaned. "Any one who could help stop this thing, or slow it down."
"Where we headed?" Malia asked. "The high school."
Athena groaned again. "All of the bad shit happens at the high school." She said, and Scott rolled his eyes.
"We start at the high school."
"And you think that's where we're gonna find this thing?" Derek asked.
Scott looked up at his friend,"No. It'll find us."
Athena rolled her eyes, "Sounds great."
