•Chapter 10•
The following day, I grabbed Ace's hoodie and stuffed it into my bag before taking a shower. After taking my sandwich from the counter, I hurriedly burst out the door, yelling, "Bye Mom!"
"Bye sweetie!" she shouted before the door slammed shut.
I bounded down the street and took a right. Seeing as the bus had just arrived, I slowed to a walking pace.
Hopping onto the bus, I whipped out my phone and checked the time. Phew, I'll make it on time.
When the bus arrived at my destination, I got off and strolled into school. The instant I spotted Eva, I made my way over.
"Where's Ace?" I asked, looking around for the dude."Geez girl, I know you like him in the like like sense but I didn't think you'd miss him already," she laughed.
"In your dreams. I have something to return to him."
She gave me the look before saying, "He's not here today."
"Oh..."
She gave me a light shove and laughed at me saying, "I knew you missed him, there's no denying."
Before I could protest, the bell rang, signalling the start of class.
"Got to go, bye!" she yelled as she bounded off towards the east wing.
I then hurriedly made my way to class. There was no way in hell I was getting told off by grumpy old Mr Hanks again.
Lunch finally arrived after the dreadful and tiring hours of lessons. School is just the bane of us students existences. Except for the nerds. Except for them.
"Take that!" Girl 1 says as she thrusts her umbrella at girl 2.
Weird word choice Maddie.
Shut up Maddie.
"God damn it," Girl 2 says.
"What the hell is happening?" I thought. There were two girls in the middle of the cafeteria, wielding umbrellas. I, like everyone else watching the scene unfold, was extremely confused.
Both of them held umbrellas in their hands but one's was broken. The girl holding the broken umbrella wore a cardigan while the other wore a flannel.
Just looking at them made me feel like breaking out in sweat. It was still summer after all.
We slipped into our seats surrounding our normal table and the two girls came over. Cody abruptly stood up and stared at the non-broken-umbrella-holding girl.
After a few seconds, like maybe thirty, Cody blinked and snapped his fingers.
"Damn it, lost again."
The girl smirked before saying, "Nice to see you too, dumbass."
By this, I've established that they know each other somehow, but still. Who are they? My question was answered by Cody who explained.
"Guys, this is Ambrosia Monroe-"
"And," she cut him off by saying, "I am in no way related to Marilyne Monroe-or am I. Oh. My. God. I might've been living a lie my whole life."
"Anyways," Cody started again, drawing attention back to him, "she's my childhood friend and you guys can call her Amber. Oh and who's your friend?"
We all peered back to behind Amber's back to look at the other girl.
"Oh, her? She's Luna. Luna Anais Hattori. Her name's actually Yuna but she likes people to call her Luna so eh."
At that, Luna/Yuna backhand smacked her friend on the shoulder and muttered through gritted teeth, "Why'd you expose me? You know I prefer Luna."
"Deal with it, shitface."
That earned Amber an eye roll from Lu, as I decided I'd call her. Malcolm, being the friendly guy that he is, offered his hand to them to shake. Rich kid socializing skillz.
Skillz. Really Maddie? I. Am. Cringe-not just cringey, I am the definition of cringe.
"Acquaintances?"
"We don't actually do the acquaintance shit cause its real awkward but we'd be more than happy to be friends." Amber says as she wears a goofy grin on her freckled face.
At that, they shook each others' hands and we all sat back down at our usual table, adding more seats to the long table to be able to fit everyone. Now I wonder how we managed to fit all of us at this all this while.
"So why were you two fighting with umbrellas just now?" I asked, curious.
"No apparent reason actually, we just do it sometimes. Sucks for me though. This is the fourth one I've broken," Lu replied, holding up the obviously bent out of shape umbrella.
"Because you suck." Amber yells.
Everyone and I mean everyone turns to look at her. Even them lunch ladies drop their ladels into the pink stuff that goes "squelch" as they sink in.
Amber smiles sheepishly at everybody as she turns away as she plays with the ends of her dark hair.
"But why are you two wearing a flannel and cardigan? It's Summer and like a hundred degrees out," Eva stated.
"So?" they asked/replied, failing to see her point.
And so, like any other day, we continued to engage in conversations. Just that this time, Cody was chatting up a storm with Amber, catching up on the happenings of the past few years.
I looked over at Emilia, only to find her keenly staring at the two as she stabbed the mystery meat the lunch ladies served.
Could she possibly be jealous?
"I-uh gotta go to the toilet," she said in a rush.
"Washroom," Joel deadpanned.
She rolled her eyes before hurriedly making her way to the washroom.
Maybe I should go after her in case she's not as okay as she seems...
At that, I got up from my seat and tailed her. Damn, I sound like a major stalker right now.
Only after we had entered the washroom did she notice I followed.
I then took the opportunity to ask.
"You okay?"
I then took a closer look. No tears. Maybe she's jealous but not going to cry?
Rolling her eyes, she placed a hand on my shoulder, gripping it slightly and said, her voice raising a little, "Seriously? Maddie...I just need to pee."
At that, my mouth formed an 'O' as I quickly left the washroom. Well that was awkward.
Kay, so it looks like I might've pissed her off a little or maybe a lot?
Geez Maddie, why are you always being the shit stirrer? I asked myself.
When I returned to the table, Eva asked me what happened and I replied with a simple, "I kinda pissed Emilia off. Again."
She sighed and mumbled something along the lines of," Of course you did Maddie, of course you did." For some reason, pissing people off is like my hidden talent. I always manage to find a way to make 'em mad.
Sometimes, it isn't intentional but I can't really explain like I can't just say," Look, I don't mean to be a bitch on purpose. It's just my personality." Like, bish what?
Apart from Amber and Lu, nothing interesting happened that week.
I then remembered I had a TAC project but Ace doesn't seem the slightest bit concerned about it. Neither am I though.
Anyways there was about two weeks more till the due date and I'm pretty sure picking a song and rehearsing it doesn't require that much time.
Wait. Lemme think again. Ugh, I need to rehearse it with Ace.
And cue the mental sigh...
