•Chapter 9•
"What?" Ace looked over at me when we stopped at a red light.
"The pink car that's following us belongs to the she-devil."
"She-devil?"
"Jenson."
"Why are the girls in this school so annoying?"
"Well you make out with them," I muttered.
Anyways I continued with,"Excuse me? What do you mean by annoying?" My gurls and I are not "annoying"...at least I don't think we are.
"Not you girls."
"Okay..."I say, with a hint of doubt. You never know with well, an actor.
Whipping out my phone, I soon get Malcolm on the line.
"Malcolm,"
"Sup, Madds."
"Jenson is tailing us. Ya'll head back first. You know the way back right?"
"Yeah, we'll see you there."
"Bye."
Now, it was time to shake this bish off our tail.
The corner of my lips curved upwards to form a smile.
"Just try to keep up Claudia. Just try."
We weaved in and out of traffic, between passing cars, taking probably what seemed like hundreds of rights. At last, she finally gave up and was nowhere to be seen. Ace started driving back to his apartment complex now and I was pretty thankful.
We had been going around in circles for forever and a half, so luckily Joel wasn't here this time. I don't think Ace would appreciate vomit on his Lambo. Just thinking of it has me shivering. Gross.
We pulled into the car park. I kinda like the smell of 'em. I don't know why though. I can't be the only one right?
When we finally got back to his apartment, the rest of the guys and girl asked us why we took so long, complaining how we made them wait real long. Well I'm sorry, was Claudia Jenson following you? No, so shut it. I would say that but I'm not going to be like that now. Everyone's already kinda tired after being forced to the mall.
"Hey Wes, can I hitch a ride back?" I asked him, slinging my bag over my shoulder.
"Oh sorry...I'm taking Eva out."
"In that case, never mind! Don't have too much fun but enjoy!" Cue the wink.
"No promises," he said, a small smile forming on his lips.
Since Wes couldn't drive me back, I then asked Malcolm, the other one that drove here. Sadly, he too, was busy.
"Family matters," he told me. Oh well, I'll just take a bus home or something.
"Need a ride home, Lynnz?" Ace asked, running a hand through his hair. Hm...I wonder whether I'll get to do it too some day.
Yeah, in your dreams.
Shut up inner me.
My stomach did a somersault when I saw that. Why did he have this stupid effect on me. Snap out of this. You need to answer his question.
"Oh, uh yeah."
"Follow me then," he said, grabbing his car keys off the table. We headed back into the carpark and got into the Lambo, yet again.
The drive was silent, not an awkward kind of silence, more of just a nice, relaxing kind of silence. And yet again, I found myself stealing glances at him.
When we arrived, I hopped out of the car and exchanged goodbyes.
I took a shower and changed into more comfortable clothes. Sweats are bae, honestly. I love wearing them. They're just so comfy and warm. Wow I suddenly realise how my heart and sweats are so similar.
And this is why I agree with people when they say I'm too proud.
I plopped down onto my beanbag and started reading some wattpad stories. I love having time to myself and relax. I honestly preferred reading e-books. Be it on a computer or my phone.
There are so many pros to reading e-books. There wouldn't be any extra weight added to carry-ons. Like so many books can fit into one device. And the paper of the e-books wouldn't weather and tear. So it won't become yellow.
After a few hours of reading, I decided to make dinner. When I left my bedroom, I was surprised to see my mother standing at the stove, busy making dinner.
"Hey Mom, when did you come back?"
"Half an hour ago."
"I didn't hear you come back."
"That's because you were too engrossed in your book, honey. I called out I was home when I came back."
My mouth formed an 'O'.
Holding the two plates of food now, she placed them on the dining table.
"Why are you back so early today anyways?"
"I'll show you after dinner."
At that, I instantly gobbled down my food and patiently waited for her to finish hers.
"How many times have I told you not to eat so fast?"
"Urm...a lot?"
She fished out an envelope from her bag. Passing it to me, I eagerly received it and carefully tore it open, making sure not to rip the envelope apart. Unfolding the piece of paper inside, I read it aloud.
"Blah blah blah...on behalf of the board, I would be most pleased to promote you, Mary Turner, and grant you a raise in your pay. Your new pay will be...HOLY SHIT. Eight grand..."
"Language, Maddelyn."
I smiled sheepishly and muttered a "sorry".
I was extremely joyous. This was incredible. Really. Though it may not seem like much, for our family of two this was more than enough.
"This change will take immediate effect," I continued, "starting tomorrow. We thank you for your hard work...yada, yada, yada.."
My mother's hard work had paid off. Seriously she hustled way too hard. Man did I hit the parent lottery. We may not be rich but she works so hard to be a good mother to a needy me.
Damn.
That night, I was in a better mood while doing my homework, allowing me to speed through it. Chemistry just took me a little longer.
Pulling the blanket up to my chest, I started reading some stupid debate Greg and Cody were having about boats in our group chat and Malcolm telling them that it was stupid. Well I mean it's weird, yes but it's entertaining so I don't try to stop them.
After the conversation died down, I turned in for the night, putting my phone to charge, not before playing a song of a singer whose voice lulled me into a deep sleep, resulting in me drifting off into the vast darkness.
Beauty sleep is always needed before us students need to return to the torturous hell hole known as "school". Life is tough. And I've only made it about 17 years so far.
