She waited on the pier for him, hope dangerously swirling in her heart.
Her mind told her to leave, but her feet stayed.
Even through the howling wind and the splatter of water, she stayed.
And then he appeared. Late, but better than never.
"I thought you forgot about me." She laughed through the awkwardness.
"Never." He shook his head.
She looked at her feet, unsure of what to say next.
He took her hand and she flinched back.
He saw the bruises.
"They're just, um." She covered the bruise with her sleeve.
He frowned. He wanted to ask, but he didn't.
"I don't know anything about you, Lila, but I want to."
"I'd like that." She nodded.
This time, they both smiled with hope.
