A week goes by quickly. I've heard rumors that Jack & Jane are over, but nobody knows what happened. 1 theory is that he dumped her for someone else, & another theory is she cheated on him. Whatever happened, I can tell they really are done. They won't look at each other. They weren't even together long enough for you to even call it a relationship. I have explained to my friends about Jeff, & that we aren't really together. They all thought it was clever, & applaud our performances.
After school, I can't find Jeff so I decide to just walk home. He needs a break anyway, must be hard work to pretend to be dating me.
I hear a car honk behind me after I walk a block, & look to see a chevy pull up beside me.
"Need a lift??" Jack calls out the window. I open the door & sit in the passenger seat. "Jeff isn't available??"
"Nope." I wonder where he is. He nods as a reply. It gets pretty quiet after that.
"Well if he's going to take in you, he could at least take you home too since your car is at home," he says. I shrug.
"Doesn't bother me."
"It does to me." I look over at him, & I can see the genuine annoyance in his face. "So what was so important that he had to ditch you for??"
"I, uh, don't know," I studder.
"That's messed up." To be honest it's kind of cute to see Jack get worked up over him leaving me to walk home.
We finally arrive at my house. I suppose I should invite him in.
"You wanna come in for a drink or something??" He says sure & he turns off the car to come in.
We end up plopping down on the couch sipping our iced tea's. He slides over closer so our legs are touching.
Thump, thump, thump.
My heart beats as I smile up at him, acting like nothing's going on in my head.
"So how are you??" I ask, breaking the silence.
"Oh i'm alright. Jane & I broke up the other day."
"Oh, sorry to hear."
"At least things are going good for you & Jeff," Jack says. I don't know what to say myself. I can't lie to his face.
"Oh, Jeff??"
"Uh yeah, your boyfriend??"
"No.."
"Oh, well, I ,uh, just kind of figured, from what I always see y'all doing..."
"I'm just helping him get the girl he likes jealous," I explain. "Kind of to get her to notice him." His face brightens up, & I can now feel his hand going up my leg.
"Cool." I feel like i'm flying as he bends over & kisses me on the lips. We keep kissing as he lies me down on the couch. Him on top of me, I feel nervous but his kiss makes me feel like im on top of the world. I feel his hand stroke my arm.
"My mom will be home any minute," I escape long enough to say.
"Oh.." He says as he gets off. I'm a little relieved, that could have turned into something more. "We could chill in your room." I nod, thinking that i'll have better control over the situation.
"Don't mind the mess," I say when we get up to my room.
"I was here just a couple weeks ago, remember??" He laughs. "Still as clean as ever." I hop on the bed & lay back down. He stands there looking at me.
"What??" I ask.
"You're really beautiful, that's all." I feel my face turn red as I look down. He lays down next to me & pulls me right next to him. I kiss Jack's lips. We keep at it for a while.
When we stop I roll over & look at the ceiling. I try not to smile but it slips.
"You're happy," Jack grins.
"What no." He kisses me again. "Maybe.." He keeps grinning.
"You're cute when you want me." I roll my eyes.
"Oh please."
"No denial," He makes his way on top of me. I feel his lips come onto mine.
"Who's wanting who??" I say, grinning when he stops. His eyebrows arch.
"Ok shut up," he says, making me laugh.
Eventually, he has to leave. I don't know if this all means we're together or not.
I call Jeff to see what happened. Turns out it was his plan, he figured Jack would make a move first chance he sees me alone. Very smart move.
"I don't know if it means we're together or not," I say.
"I guess you'll have to wait to see what he does," Jeff tells me. He's probably right. Seems like everything's finally falling in place.
