I kept my door a little bit open so I could hear my parents talk.
"I don't understand why she would get such a crazy notion in her head," Mom says.
"She just thought the dude looked like me, & is being over protective. Kinda sweet really."
"I guess. I just hope she gets over it soon."
"I'll go in & talk to her later, & we'll get this all sorted out." I look to the floor. No we won't get this sorted out. He can't even admit to his mistake. I silently close my door & drag myself to bed, then check my phone.
'Oh ok. Whats up' Jack has texted. I texted him that i'm pissed, & soon enough I hear a rock hit my window.
"Sorry I couldn't have been here sooner, trafic ya know." I grin down at him.
"Can you climb the tree?" I ask. He makes his way up, & is soon sitting on the branch by my window.
"So what's got you upset?" So I explain to him everything.
"Wow. No offense but your dad is an asshole," Jack tells me after I finish.
"Tell me about it."
"You're going to be ok, I promise." I just realized I had tears streaming my cheeks. He wipes them off. "Come on. You need to get out of here for a while." I nod as he takes my hand & helps me out of my window. Next thing I know, i'm in the passenger seat of his chevy.
"Where we headed?" I ask.
"To get you some ice cream then back to my place."
"Yay. And Jack?"
"Yeah?"
"Thanks." He smiles down at me. Soon we're at the ice cream parlor, where I order a double fudge chocolate surpreme. Jack gets a cookies'n creme. We sit at a table near the window. I try to get my mind off of my father, but it keeps coming back in. So I ask Jack about his day.
"Nothing really happened to me today.." He looks up at me & grins.
"What?" I ask him.
"You have an ice cream moustache." I hold in a laugh.
"I'm sure that's attractive."
"Only on you," he winks causing me to blush. We finish our ice cream then go to his house.
"Nobody's here so make yourself at home," Jack tells me when we get inside. I hop onto his black leathery couch. His living room walls are white, so there's a big contrast between that & the black carpeted floor. I check my phone to see the time, it's already 9. I also have a missed call from my Father.
"Don't bother calling him back," Jack tells me, seeming to read my mind. "He's just going to try to manipulate you." I nod, taking in what he just said.
"You're right." I look back at my phone though to see that he just left a voicemail. I put it on speaker so Jack could hear.
"You need to get your ass back to this house right now. You need to tell your mom about how you lied about seeing me with some woman. Quit trying to ruin our family! There's going to be consequences otherwise." I start to shake.
"Shh...it's ok. You're safe. You're safe with me," Jack tells me as he holds me in his arms. "You're going to spend the night here with me." I nod. After a little while, we go upstairs & I slept by his side.
I wake up with my head on Jack's chest.
"Good morning," Jack whispers. I look up then pull back to get off his chest. He grins. "You're cute when you sleep." I blush.
"I need to go to my house to get my things for school," I say.
"Why don't we skip today?"
"Really?"
"Yeah. I know how to forge notes so we can give them to the school tomorrow."
"Alright." I smile as he pulls me in closer to him. We stay that way for a while. I finally pull out my phone to listen to a voicemail from my mom.
"Emma, it's mom. Please come home. We have a lot to talk about. I still love you."
"Was that your mom?" I nodded.
"She wants me to come home."
"Is that a good idea?"
"I have to face her sooner or later. I'm just gonna suck it up now."
"You brave soul," he says while putting his hand over his heart.
He drives me over to my house.
"Thanks for everything," I tell him. He gives me a smile as I get out of the car. "If you ever need anything, you tell me."
I unlock the front door & step inside.
"Mom?"
"She just went to work, & I called in late just in case you decided to show your face," my father says. I stiffen. He walks closer to me. I'm honestly afraid out of my mind, he's been lying so I have no idea what kind of man he really is.
"I can't believe you pulled that shit last night," he began. "It would kill me to lose her. When she gets home I want you to apologize for speaking of it. Am I clear?"
"But, but you cheated on her! I'm not taking a word I said last night back." He grabs my wrist, tightening his grip on it each second til I yelp.
"Am I clear? I wouldn't want to punish you." I slowly nod my head. "Good. Now go upstairs & get your school stuff, i'll take you in." & that was the end of that. Upstairs I notice my wrist bleeding from where his nails dug in & I frown. How much of my life has been a lie?
