Sarah POV

It was 8:30 A.M. I had just recently got into work. I was hanging out in the ED for a minute checking up on some patients that needed an eval when I heard Maggie say "incoming. 16 year old girl. Found beaten in her home." Maggie update the doctors. Natalie ran over the the entrance. Beaten in her home, how awful. I thought to myself. Then I saw the stretcher come in. "Oh my god" I said out loud. "Reese?" April said with concern. "Th..that's my sister" I barely managed to get out.

My 16 year old sister August aka Auggie and my mom had just recently moved to Chicago. My sister is in kidney failure and my mom wanted her treated here. "Walk with me Reese." Natalie said motioning for me. "Fill me in." Natalie said "16 year old girl found beaten in her home. Mostly looks like she was kicked. The home was mainly left alone. The targets were the people in it." said the EMT, who happened to be Sylvie Brett.

We pulled the stretcher into room 3. "On the count of 3" Natalie said "1..2.." and then we moved her on the the bed. "I don't like this gash on her head" Natalie said examining her. "Where was she kicked?" I asked the Sylvie, "In her stomach and I am assuming head too." I pulled up her shirt to see her abdomen covered in bruises. "Nat" I said look at her stomach. Suddenly Auggie's breathing started to pick up. "We need an x-ray now" Natalie shouted. I stepped back as they took a picture of her abdomen.

The black and white picture showed up on the screen and reviled that she had a rib sticking into her lung. "We need Connor and the O.R. now" Natalie said and she pulled up the bars of the stretcher. Then I watched my little sister be rolled out of sight.

"Sarah," Said Detective Lindsey "we need to talk." she said with a glum look on her face. This entire time I hadn't been able to think about where my mother was. Erin took me in to one of the private waiting rooms. "My mother?" I ask not even finishing my thought. Erin shook her head. Tears began to welt in my eyes. "How?"  I asked Erin. "Well we aren't positive but were assuming she was beaten. Like Auggie." I hadn't told many people that my mother and sister were here but Erin was one that I did. "Do you know of anyone who would want to hurt your mom and sister?' Erin asked. I shook my head no. "No. I don't. They hadn't been here even two weeks. I don't..." I answered. By now tears were streaming down my face. "I'm her guardian now." I came to a realization. "We're gonna get these bastards, Sarah. We will get them."

"Sylvie said that the home itself was left alone. Was that true?" I asked Erin. She nodded. "That means they were there for them." I said. She nodded again. She then began to ask me more questions. I hadn't realized how much time had passed. It had already been an hour and a half. Natalie opened the door and I jumped to my feet. "She's out" Natalie said. I ran out of the room to Natalie's side as I waited for her to fill me in. "They were able to fix the rib and make sure no fluid would get in her lung. They stitched the gash on her head. It's highly unlikely that she remembers anything." She informed me. I soon entered the room I saw my sister laying on the bed with gauze wrapping her head. "She should be awake soon." Natalie said putting her hand on my back. "Do you have time.. to wait with me?" I asked "I was already planning on it." She smiled a sad smile.

We sat there for about an hour. Suddenly I saw her fingers begin to move. "Auggie," I gasped holding her hand. Slowly her eyes began to open. "Sarah" she moaned. "Hey I'm here. I'm right here." Her eyes were now fully open and staring into mine. "Where am I?" she asked "You're in the hospital" I glanced over to Natalie. "Who is that?" she asked turning her attention to Natalie. "I'm Dr. Manning, I'm your doctor." Natalie smiled. "Was I in an accident?" she asked Natalie. Natalie looked at more for conformation as what to say. "Why don't you try to rest? Does your head hurt?" I asked her placing my hand on her cheek. "Yeah it hurts." she frowned "Sarah where is momma at?" she asked curiously.

Suddenly Erin walked in. Erin and Auggie had met earlier in the week while I was taking Auggie around the town and Erin met up with us. "Hi Erin" she smiled at her new proclaimed friend. "Hi Auggie, how are you feeling?" she asked Auggie as she moved closer to the bed. "My head hurts. My tummy does too. It feels like I've been kicked a thousand times."  she said still holding on to my hand. I then looked at Erin. Nobody had told Auggie she had been kicked. "Wait, did I get a new kidney?" she looked at me as her eyes filled with excitement.  "No Aug. You're still on the list." I sighed. "Then why am I here? Where is mom? Why wont anyone tell me anything?!" she was clearly getting frustrated. "Auggie you need to calm down" Natalie said motherly. "Aug, I need you to look at me. Before I tell you anything I need you to know that I am here for you and Erin is, and Natalie is, and so many more people, okay?" she nodded "Okay, earlier this morning someone broke in to your apartment. They beat you and mom. You had a big gash on your head and had to get stitches and you had some broken ribs. Momma didn't make it." I was now crying and Auggie was too. "Did they find the bad people that did it?" Auggie said looking at me and then Erin. "No but we will" she assured her.

Natalie turned to Erin "I think that August needs some rest before you ask her any questions. Maybe you should come back this afternoon." Natalie suggested. Erin nodded "I'll be back tonight Auggie. Maybe if you're up for it we can play some card games." Erin smiled. "Promise?" Auggie asked "Promise" she smiled.  Natalie then told her to get some rest to and left. "Do you have to work too?" she asked me. "No. No I'm going to be here with you." I said pulling a chair up to the side of her bed. "What happens now?" she asked staring down at her lap. "I don't know yet Aug, I don't know"
