Auggie POV

We were sitting in history learning about the Holocaust when Bria's phone buzzed. "Who is it?" I whispered while still writing the notes on the board. "Gabi, she said she's ending her shift early because she doesn't feel well. She's picking me up at your place after school." I sighed. "Looks like it's just you and Erin tonight." she continued to write. "I wish Sarah would come home early. You got lucky."

Then my phone buzzed. I saw my sisters name on the screen. "Speaking of the devil." I unlocked my phone.

Sarah: Hope you are doing better. Erin will be over at 4.

She didn't say anything about the parent teacher conferences.

"Great." I sighed. "What?" Bria asked confused. "It's just weird. I don't know if I'm in trouble or not. I don't think Sarah even knows that. And my dad is here? All just weird."

The bell rang and we collected our things and headed to our lockers. I put my coat on and got my backpack and headed towards the door. "Auggie! Bria! Wait!" I heard Marie shout trying to catch up to use. I laughed as I turned my head and saw my friend struggling to catch up to us. "Hi Marie" I chuckled. Marie and I became friends after I got home from the hospital. We saw each other at school but hadn't gotten too close yet. She was a good friend.

"So who wants to do my homework.." Marie asked looking at Bria and I. "20 dollars.. anyone.. please." Marie was smart but avoided work at all costs. Bria and I refused to encourage her work ethic. We always walked home together. We usually passed the hospital on our way home.

I stared at the building as we passed. "Earth to Auggie." Bria said getting my attention. "Hmm" I focused to her. "Distracted much?" Marie joked. "Just a little." I said. "Want to tell me why you went MIA this morning?" Marie glared at Bria as we continued to walk.

"My dad is in town." My eyes focused ahead and my curly hair blew in the wind. "Oh." they looked at each other again. "Why do you keep looking at each other." I asked. "Were worried Auggie." Bria said. Marie tried to cut her off but failed. "What do you mean?" I asked not understanding. "You've been a bit all over the place lately." Marie admitted. "Have not!" I argued. "Have too." Bria said almost immediately. "I'm fine."

We got to our building and this was when we would split to go home. "Bye Marie." Bria and I both said, and headed inside.  When we got in the lobby of the building we found Gabi and Erin talking. "Hello there special ladies." Erin smiled. I greeted them with a smile. Gabi and Erin glanced at each other. "Seriously? You guys too?" I frowned at them. Gabi looked at Bria. "You guys have been talking about me haven't you?" I looked at them. "No" Bria shook her head almost instantly. "Well I think this is our cue to go." Gabi said shoing Bria off. "What do you want to do tonight?" Gabi asked me. "Not have my every move analyzed." I said sarcastically. "Why don't you do your homework and we will go have dinner."

Erin watched TV while I worked silently at the dining room table. "Finished." I said closing my math text book. "Prefect timing I'm starving."

We headed towards millennial park and decide to get shake shack. We sat silently but I know that Erin was studying me. "Auggie." she said getting me to look at her. "You know I read people for a living don't you?" I nodded my head. "So why don't you tell me whats been going on." she said taking a bite of her burger. "I ugh.. I don't know," I lied. "Auggie you're lying." I nodded. "I had been stressed and school has just been a lot and it's really hard to focus and I try I swear I do but I just can't and then my dad came and I guess it just like set me over." I don't think I realized how much I had been struggling until I said it out loud. "Well you sister is going to make sure your dad doesn't mess with you." she sighed. "Please don't tell Sarah. She has so much to worry about anyway."

"You're more like your sister than you know." I shook my head. "No were different." I insisted. "No. Just a like."

"I haven't seen  my dad in years. I don't why he is here." I admitted. "Me either kiddo."

After finishing dinner we decided to walk around the town. After doing that we heading home knowing that Sarah would be there soon.

When arriving to the apartment I put on my pajamas and brushed my teeth while Erin watched TV. I heard the front door opening and chattering coming from the living room.

I exited the bathroom and saw my sister looking visibly stressed. I feel bad knowing Sarah at least had a somewhat normal life before taking me over. "How was work?" I asked getting her attention. "Good." she got herself a glass of water. I felt tension in the room. I sat quietly on the couch waiting for Erin to leave.

After about 20 minutes of conversation with my sister Erin left. Sarah had gone to put her PJ's on. She came back in the room. "Are you ready to go to bed?" she asked in a monotone voice. "Are you mad at me?" I asked noticing the lack of empathy in her voice. "No, Auggie, I'm just tired and stressed and just want to do everything right. What if dad could give you more." she sat next to me. "No you promised." I stood up quickly. "You promised that you wouldn't let him." I raised my voice. "Auggie calm down." she ordered. "I don't want to stay here tonight." I began to pace.

I loved my sister. How could she say something like that knowing it is not what I want. "Stop. Now." she stood up too and grabbed my shoulders forcing me to face her. "You are going to go to bed in this apartment. My room or yours you will stay here and you will wake up tomorrow and you are going to school and we are going to live our lives like none of this ever happened.
