Sarah POV
When I arrived home I expected to find my sister getting ready for the dance. Instead she was laying out the couch wallowing in her own self pity.
"Excuse me." I said sitting next to her. "Why aren't you getting ready for the dance?" I laid next to her. She wrapped her arms around me and laid her head on my chest. I held her close to me. "It got cancelled. Supposed to have bad weather." She continued to hold on to me. With soft little breaths a few sighs here and there. "I miss momma." I watched a tear roll down her cheek. "I didn't like being sick. But I miss how things were. I miss the routine. I even miss the hospital." She admitted.
This was so easy to understand. The safeness and routine of the hospital was so much easier for her to comprehend than this was. She was struggling and it was visible. How to fix it was not.
"You still get to see Bria, you know?" She nodded. I was able to start Auggie on medication this morning. I took it to her at school. "How was school?" I knew that the medicine would take awhile for her to kick in. There are so many side effects I was worried. "Just kind of tired. But better I think" she sounded unsure.
The rest of the night was laid back and chill. Connor made us dinner. We all watched movies together and eventually went to bed. Auggie seemed to go to bed unusually early but I was not surprised due to the fact that the pills are notorious for making people tired.
Connor was taking a shower, Auggie was sleeping, and Sylvie and I were washing dishes quietly. "Could I talk to you about something?" Sylvie asked as she handed me a dish to dry and put away. "Sure Sylv, what's up?" I asked looking straight at her. "Next time Auggie has a school event or a conference or something, can I come? I just, I love Auggie like my own sister. In a way I try to be a motherly figure to her, too. I help make her dinner and help her with her homework. I try to make sure she is put together. I know that you and Auggie are siblings and I hope I am not overstepping my boundaries. But I just thought that came with the coparenting we agreed with." I had excluded Sylvie and I hadn't even realized it.
"Sylvie, I am so sorry. I appreciate all that you do for Auggie. I know that it was a lot of responsibility for you to take on but you did it without thought and that shows how selfless you are. I would not have been able to do this without you." I hugged her.
Connor went to bed and Sylvie and I laid on the couch until 1 telling stories about things that had happened with Auggie. We laughed until our guts hurt and then we both went to bed.
It was 3am and I was tossing and turning. It's like my body was telling me something isn't right. Before I know it I hear Auggie scream. "Sarah! Sarah! Sylvie!"
I couldn't get out of my bed fast enough. When I ran into Auggies room I found in clenching her stomach, covered in sweat.
Sylvie bolted in too.
"Call 911." I ordered Slyvie. She frantically dialed the phone. "Help it hurts so bad." Auggie cried. I touched her forehead to comfort her and she was burning up. "Put them on speaker." I told Sylvie.
"911, what's your emergency"
"My sister is 16. She had a kidney transplant last month. She's having intense stomach pains, sweating, and fever."
The EMT's arrived in a timely manner and carted her off to the hospital. Sylvie, Connor, and I all met there. Connor rushed back to the ER to help and Sylvie and I waited.
Sylvie POV
Within 10 minutes of being at the hospital Gabby, Matt, Bria, Kelly, Stella, Otis, and Lily had joined us. We knew that more of Fire house 51 was more than likely on the way. When Connor came out of the ER he had told us that Auggie had been seizing and that she was currently sedated. They believed that her body had been rejecting her kidney. "Test me." Otis offered. Gabby had already been tested and wasn't a match. The others then began to ask for the same to be done. They all were willing to give Auggie their kidney.
"Can I go see her?" Sarah asked softly, "Sylvie needs to come too." she insisted. Connor nodded his head and with that we were heading into the ER.
Auggies curly hair laid softly on her pillow as she slept peacefully. This was a scene Sarah had seen many times before. Sarah placed her head on Auggies forehead. It was still damp from the sweat. "Still running a fever." she told me. She then put her hand on Auggies hair. Auggie had grown on me so much. We spent much time together. She was wearing her favorite PJS. Plaid pajama pants with a button up top to match. She wore this outfit so often if one didn't know any better they would think they were the only pajamas she owned.
The door soon slid open. It was Natalie, also in her pajamas. "I came as soon as I heard." she told us. "Ethan said shes rejecting the kidney." I told Natalie. Sarah was calmly holding Auggies hand.
Natalie consulted with Ethan and Connor and they thought it best that Auggie be moved to her own room in the ICU. She was still sedated but they expected to be moving her upstairs soon. They all three agreed to collectively work on the case.
I was sitting with Auggie when I saw a shadow in the doorway. I assumed it was Sarah. She had been out talking to Connor and left me with Auggie. "I knew about all that Auggie and been through before but I didn't have to see it." Bria's voice softly spoke. "She didn't talk about it much but I knew it was hard for her. She never let on that things were hard for her." She sighed. "She had been frustrated with me lately. She didn't know how much she was struggling she didn't know what I saw." I knew she was talking about the ADD. "Today when I had to leave she was so sad. I didn't mean to make her so sad."
"Bria I told you that we couldn't come back here yet." Gabby said stepping behind the girl. "I just wanted to see her. One last time."
"It's not the last time." I assured her.
Gabby smiled and me and took Bria by the hand to escort her away from the room.
I heard a moan from the bed. Auggies eyes widen and she smiled softly. "Hi." she groaned. "Hi there." I smiled at her.
Her hair was wet from sweating so much. Her skinned tone didn't look the same. Her eyes looked tired. "I'm sore." she told me. "I'm not surprised. You had a seizure."
She looked at me for a moment. "Thank you Sylvie. Thank you for being in my life."
My heart sank. I was so glad to hear those words. "You're welcome August."
Connor and Sarah then walked in. "What's wrong with me." Auggie raised a brow at Connor. "You're rejecting your kidney."
