"Getting Sailor to Open Up."

song: All Star by Smash Mouth
I drove, going to see Sailor and Dawn as soon as their school let out. I got there and Sailor was sitting on a ledge, looking moody as she stared into the distance as Dawn sat next to her. Dawn was obviously concerned, but Sailor refused to even look at her best friend.
I parked my car, locked it, and I came over. Dawn smiled and said "hey" upon seeing me, Sailor just stared, almost glaring.
"Hey, Dawn. Hey...Sailor? Sailor..." I waved my hand in front of her face.
She would still blink and breathe, but she wouldn't move or acknowledge me. I sighed inwardly, I hated it when Sailor was acting like this. I always hated it when she was sad. I want the girl I love to always be happy.
I had an idea to cheer her up. Thank God for music.
I started singing. "Somebody once told me, the world is gonna roll me,
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed...
She was looking kinda dumb with her finger and her thumb,
in the shape of an 'L' on her forehead..."
As I sung the last lyric in that verse, I grabbed Sailor's left hand and made her give herself a cute little 'L' on her forehead. Sailor finally made eye contact at this gesture, but turned away quickly. Dawn giggled at how I managed to be successful in making Sailor give herself the 'L' sign.
"Well the years start coming,
and they don't stop coming,
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running,"
I ran in place for a second at that.
"Didn't make sense not to live for fun,
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb.
So much to do, so much to see,"
I cupped my eyes with my hand and made binoculars.
"So what's wrong with taking the backstreet?
You'll never know if you don't go,
You'll never shine if you don't glow...
Hey now, you're an all star, get your game on, go play..."
I dribbled an air basketball.
"Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid..."
I strummed an air guitar.
"And all that glitters is gold,"
I made jazz hands at the word "glitter."
"Only shooting stars break the mold...
It's a cool place, and they say it gets colder,
You're bundled up now, wait till you get older,"
I cuddled myself and pretended to shiver.
"But the meteor men beg to differ,
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture.
The ice we skate, is getting pretty thin,"
I pretended I was ice-skating, I pushed my feet off the ground with air skates, a movement well-rehearsed in me thanks to those old ice skating lessons.
"The water's getting warm, so you might as well swim,"
I pinwheeled my arms as if I was swimming.
"My world's on fire, how about yours?
That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored...
Hey now, you're an all star, get your game on, go play,"
I dribbled another air basketball, this time passing it between my legs like a real baller.
"Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid,"
I strummed my air guitar extra hard, because I was getting into the song.
"All that glitters is gold,
Only shooting stars break the mold..."
Dawn made jazz hands with me at the word 'glitter' and started singing along.
"Hey now, you're an all star, get your game on, go play,"
Air basketball with Dawn here.
"Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid,"
Air guitar with Dawn as if we were in the same band together here.
"And all that glitters is gold,
Only shooting stars...
Somebody once asked, 'could I spare some change for gas,
I need to get myself away from this place...'"
I rubbed my fingers together at the words "change for gas."
"I said, 'Yep, what a concept, I could use a little fuel myself,
And we could all use a little change...'"
I rubbed my fingers together harder again at the word "change."
"Well, the years start coming, and they don't stop coming,
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running,"
I ran in place kinda goofy and Dawn laughed before picking up the beat of the music with me.
"Didn't make sense not to live for fun,
Your brain gets smart, but your head gets dumb.
So much to do, so much to see,
So what's wrong with taking the backstreet?
You'll never know if you don't go,
You'll never shine if you don't glow...
Hey now, you're an all star, get your game on, go play,"
I pretended to air-basketball past Dawn into a basket:
"Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid,"
Dawn and I blared out on our air guitars again.
"And all that glitters is gold,
Only shooting stars break the mold...
And all that glitters is gold,
Only shooting stars break the mold..."
I winded down and pretended to be a drained robot after the last lyrics of the song. I turned away from Sailor and started to walk away, because if that didn't work, nothing's going to, so I should just give up now...
"March, wait."
Sailor's standing up and looking nervously at me.
"I...guess I'll tell you. And Dawn."
"Okay. I'm always available to listen, Sailor." I reassured her.
Sailor cracked a smile. "I know. And to always sing to me, to make me feel better?"
"Of course."
I love you, Sailor.
We three, Sailor, Dawn, and I, sat down, and Sailor began to speak her mind.
