"Ledges."

MarchxDawn

song: Jumper by Third Eye Blind

I was walking downtown by myself when I suddenly saw a crowd huddled around the bottom of a parking garage. I noticed up at the top was a person standing on the ledge with police officers attempting to coax the person away from danger with no luck.

I listened to the voice of the would-be jumper in the wind and my heart went cold as I realized it was Dawn's voice.

No...

[...]

I ran up the stairs and burst through the door of the highest floor connected to the stairwell. I had to run up another floor of the parking garage before I reached the top. I could see Dawn from where I stood. I was panting, but as the police officers tried to drive me away, I had enough breath to scream, "Dawn! DAWN!"

She turned at the sound of my voice and recognition flashed through her eyes, which I saw even from here. The police officers let me through and as I tried to approach Dawn, she made a feint to jump.

"No! No, I won't move." I promised as I took a step back.

She was really, really scared. I wanted more than anything to rush and pull her off the ledge, away from harm, but she would jump first. I had to save her with my words.

I begged, "Why are you doing this?!"

"You wouldn't understand!" was Dawn's tear-streaked reply.

I called to her, "I think I know!"

"How could you possibly know?!" screamed Dawn as the wind whipped dangerously around us.

I yelled, "It was Sunny! Your horse, your love of this world, died! You don't think I would understand, but I do!"

Sunny has been with Dawn since...forever. I don't even know myself how long it's been. But Dawn has connected with that horse beyond just what someone else sees as a horse and a rider. Dawn loves that horse more than anyone, more than her best friend, Sailor.

I've rode horses. I understand what the bond between a horse and a rider is like. It's deep and with horses being intelligent animals, it's truly a friendship. Dawn has just lost the most important thing in her life, attempting suicide is always irrational, but...I get where she's coming from. And I have to stop her.

I took out my iPhone and switched it to play a song I knew well. Dawn hesitated and made motions to go over the edge once more.

"Please! I know you're in a lot of pain right now, but just listen! Hear what I'm trying to say to you! Listen to this song!" I implored her.

I hit the play button and cast my gaze reverently at Dawn as I started to sing along.

"I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend...

You could cut ties with all the lies,

That you've been living in,

And, if you do not want to see me again,

I would understand.

I would understand..."

I sung with all the meaning I could muster up in my ever-bleeding heart. It could be me on that ledge, if I'd ever chosen to give up long ago.

"The angry boy,

A bit too insane,

Icing over a secret pain

You know you don't belong...

You're the first to fight,

You're way too loud,
