Knowing a man like Bruce Banner could be called both a blessing and a curse. He was sweet and talented but also nervous and unconfident, because of this it took him almost a year to confess his feelings for (Y/N). Though it also meant the relationship was pure and sweet the whole way through. Bruce was a very powerful man, although he never acted like it, he was so high up in the science world that when (Y/N) asked if he could get her a job somewhere he said it was no problem. And sure enough, he found her a position in one of the off-site avenger facilities. The job was perfect, she was head of a small team of people who were looking into new bio-technical projects (her area of expertise). She got on well with everyone and was very well liked, the work was just what she wanted to study and it meant she often got to see Bruce when he stopped by. However, it was short lived. The higher ups were lazy and limited what work they had to do, meaning most of it as dumped on (Y/N). Soon she was basically doing her job and three other people's. As work piled up so did the stress, deadlines came closer and jobs harder, it seemed everything was falling apart around her.
Never did she tell Bruce though, he had worked to get her this job and she didn't want to seem ungrateful. Of course, he could tell there was something wrong but she brushed him off whenever he asked. Her colleges often told her that if she kept this up eventually it would become too much. Despite her resentment to the facts she knew it as true, and sure enough a few days after Bruce left for an intense mission, she broke down.
The stack of light brown files stuffed with paper were terrifying now. She used to carry these files with pride but now she dredged them. It was three in the morning but the (H/C) wasn't in bed, instead she was sat in the kitchen sorting files. Not ones from her division but the higher ups. As she scanned a page on osmosis her eyelids began to droop. Quickly she snapped them open again and shook her head.
"No, no, don't fall asleep. Don't have long..." she trailed off her head fell forward and hit the table.
Once again, her head snapped up. After rubbing her eyes furiously and pulling herself from the chair she decided coffee was the way to go. While she watched the kettle boiling (Y/N) reached for a mug off the shelf. The slow sounds of the rain outside and cold apartment made her want to crawl into bed and drift off but she stayed strong. The kettle pinged and she poured it into the mug with some coffee beans and cold water. Quickly she downed the cup. It wasn't often she drank coffee but Bruce used it to stay up later so why not. She sat down with a thump and tried to pick up another file but her arms seemed heavy. In fact, everything seemed heavy. The room swayed slightly and she fell to the floor. It was too much. She had gone too far and she knew it. The tears fell just like the pounding rain outside as she pulled her body into a ball on cold wood.
Too lost in her own pain she didn't heard the front door opening. Bruce trudged in, dumped his wet coat on a hook and dropped the mission bag he carried. His footsteps were light as he tried not to wake his love, who he knew would be asleep. Before he reached the bedroom door a sound reached his ears. Quite sobs could be heard from the next room. He slipped through the doorway and instantly noticed his girlfriend, curled up on the ground sobbing her heart out.
"(Y/N)!" in a second he was by her side.
Easily he scooped her up into his arms and held her tight against his chest. The slow steady beat of his heart and after a while her crying slowed. He kissed the top of her head and leaned back a little to see her face.
"What happened darling?" his face was filled with concern.
"I-I just can't do this anymore Bruce..." her voice was barely a whisper
"Can't do what? Our relationship?" he was panicking now
"No! Absolutely not, that's the only thing keeping me going to be honest"
"Thank God" he took a deep breath and calmed down "what's the matter sweetheart?"
"W-work is just t-too much..." she proceeded to explain everything the higher ups made her do for them and how the work load was too great.
"They can't do that, I'll speak to them, I promise I'll fix this" she only nodded back and buried her face into his chest. He sighed.
"(Y/N), look at me" she didn't make a move so he moved a hand to her chin and tilted her head up.
Her eyes were red and full of tears, as were her cheeks. Slowly her wiped them away and kissed her forehead.
"Honey, why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"You worked to get me this job and I can't even stick it out for a few months. I'm pathetic, sorry"
"No, no, no. (Y/N) you are the most perfect thing I've ever seen, if you can't do the job then I'll find you a better one but I think as soon as those idiots get off your back you will be amazing. You are truly the greatest thing in my life and I promise you, you are anything but pathetic. You are strong and talented and smart and...my God I love you" he laughed slightly and the realisation.
He noticed for the first time, just how much he loved, needed, cared for, the woman in front of him. She realised just how much he did too, and felt the same. Slowly he stood up with her in his arms and walk into the bed room. As soon as he placed her on the bed she was out like a light. As he laid next to her and watched her sleeping face he smiled.
