Chapter Eight: Almost Cracking

When I walk into school I find that almost everyone's eyes are on me and I don't know why? I mean I could've made that much of an impression on that party could I? So I just ignore everyone's prying eyes as I walk to my locker where Peeta is already waiting for me, I don't remember much but what I do remember is us dancing together after the exception that I made and when I remembered I just wanted to crawl into a hole and die but now I'm going to have to face him, my embarrassment still inside me, I walk up to my locker and Peeta smiles

"You better thank me. I saved your ass with your dad" he says as I open my locker

"You did?" I answer

"Yeah I had to carry you in cause you passed out from all the drinks you had. I had to drive you home because Madge was too drunk to do it" he explains and I hug him

"Thank you. If my dad had found out I would've not been able to go to another party ever" I sigh breaking from the hug

"It was no problem. Friends look out for each other and make sure their parents don't know that they went two drinks over the limit" he chuckles and I smile at him

"You're my lifesaver. Now I know that I can always count on you" I reply

"Well I'm always here when you need. I didn't know you were so good at ping pong" he admits as I shut my locker and then start walking to homeroom

"Oh yeah, I use to play it with my dad since we were little" I reply

"Well at the party we won two games in a row. We're the undefeated team at ping pong" he chuckles as we sit down

"Wow, I guess we make a pretty good team" I smirk and he smirks back

"I guess we do. Everdeen and Mellark, teamed together" he chuckles, I roll my eyes at him, soon Madge walks in and when she sits next to me I notice that she seems.... not herself

"Madge? Are you okay?" I ask her

"Yeah! I'm fine" she smiles, I give her a questioning look but she looks away and looks straight ahead instead, I'm going to get out of her whatever has made her like this and I won't leave her alone till I do.

"What is going on with you?" I ask Madge in English class

"It doesn't matter Katniss" she sighs

"It does. I told you the most painful thing that's happened to me so I want this in return" I reply

"Fine.... but you promise not to tell Peeta anything or Annie or Finnick" Madge says and I nod

"At the party.... Gale and I.... we slept together" she admits and my eyes grow wide

"What?!" I whisper

"I know! I know! But we were drunk and it just.... happened on its own" she whispers back

"Okay what was the plan?" I ask

"Try and forget it.... Gale has a great friendship with Peeta and him finding out that he slept with his little sister wouldn't come off as all fine and dandy. That goes against the 'bro code' so we're going to forget it but I can't and I don't want to, I've liked Gale more than a friend ever since last year" she explains

"Wow.... so that's it? Just forget?" I ask and she nods, wow, both Madge and Gale are in a giant pickle but how can they be together without breaking the 'bro code' because I know that both Madge and Gale need to be together, it's suppose to happen.

During lunch it's awkward between Madge and Gale but luckily the others don't notice, everyone except me that is, but then I remember that I'm in my own pickle because I feel like my 'crush' on Peeta is growing and I feel that I need to tell him everything but I can't, I'm too scared that he'll run away, I'm too scared that he'll look at me like I'm a slut or something and so that's why I need to win this deal.... so I still have the greatest friend in the world

"Katniss" I break out of my trance to look at Annie

"Yeah?" I say

"I said did you want to come sleepover my house this weekend?" She asks

"Um, I'm not allowed to because of my parents and about their anxiety of me not being somewhere where they don't know I am very well" I reply

"Then maybe we could have it at yours?" Annie asks and I smile

"Okay, so it's just us girls?" I ask

"Yeah, the guys will probably be doing stuff together then anyways" Annie replies, I think this'll be nice.... just us girls hanging out together.

So I decided to get a ride home with Madge and Peeta because it's gotten a little bit colder and they both weren't going to let me walk home by myself in the cold. On our way home we drop into their parents bakery to get some hot chocolates, when we walk in there are two tall men who look similar to Peeta talking to Peeta's parents

"Rye! Challah!" Madge squeals and runs up to the men to embrace them

"Hey squish, how you doing in school" one of them asks

"Good, I'm hoping to get into a good college. I'm trying hard to keep good enough grades" she smiles then the two men look to where I stand not that far from Peeta

"Hey Peet, you never told us you had a girlfriend" one of them chuckles making me blush

"Oh.... we're not together. We're just friends" he replies and his brothers look at him surprised

"Wow, I was not expecting that" then one of them turn to me

"I'm Rye. I'm single and twenty five so if you ever need to talk I'm here" he smirks but I glare at him

"In your dreams pretty boy" I snap making Peeta scoff at how his brother got put in his place

"Don't mind him, he's an airhead. I'm Challah, nice to meet you" he introduces, I shake his hand with a nod

"I'm Katniss" I say

"We've never seen you before? Have you been here long?" He asks and I shake my head

"My family and I moved here at the end of August" I reply

"Well it was nice meeting you. Now Rye and I have to go, I've got a wife and kids to get back to, Rye needs to be dropped off at his girlfriends house" Challah says, the two brothers both say goodbye before they walk out, Peeta apologises for his older brother Rye's behaviour

"Challah is really nice" I admit as we get back into Peeta's car

"Yeah, he's the oldest in our family. He's a lawyer so he's more easier to handle than Rye" Peeta chuckles starting the car

"What does Rye do?" I ask

"He's a mechanic well he's just finished college and starts a mechanic job at the mechanic place around the corner from Burger King" Peeta answers

"I think I like Challah a little better" I admit making Madge and Peeta both laugh, god I love Peeta's laugh.... a perfect guy that I can't have...
