I met my dad at the cafe... along with Melanie. I rolled my eyes at the thought of her. Why did he have to bring her here?
"Hey Dad." I said taking a seat across from the two of them.
"Hey, Sweetheart." He smiled. I sat down and surveyed the menu. I looked up when my dad cleared his throat and gestured towards Melanie. "Don't you have something to say?"
"What?" He cleared his throat again and gave me a stern look.
I sighed. "Hi Melanie." She gave me a weak smile when she said hi back.
The waiter came by and we ordered our food. Dad and I talked mostly about school and college next year. But Melanie didn't say much of anything. Most of the time she looked lost or faraway in her own thoughts. This was the first she didn't try to insult me with her little slick comments. So something was definitely up with her.
I was finishing my frappe when Dad called my name. "Chanel,"
"Yeah?" I looked up. Now he was looking like the way Melanie was looking a few minutes ago.
"We have news for you."
"Good or bad?" I lift one perfectly arched eyebrow up.
"It's good news." Great. I could really use some good news right now.
"Okay, spill it!" I smiled and it quickly faded when Dad said, "We're having a baby! Mel's pregnant."
Did I hear him right? Or were my ears playing games with me?
