But I Love Her

*** Peeta´s POV ***

(Before Katniss left with her dad)

 We are having such a good time! I can´t believe they did this just because it's my birthday. I can't believe Katniss cares so much for me. She is lovely. I just love her. She is beautiful,sweet, and caring. I couldn´t ask for anything else rather than be more than friends with her but right now it doesn't matter because we are six year old. I just wish she'll be mine. I have to wait. That's love right? Kepping the promise any way.

Right now we are princes and we are saving our princesses. I am Katniss's Romeo, Finnick is Annie´s Eric, Cato is Clove´s Beast, and Marvel is Glimmer´s Flynn. I know is weird for us boys to play this but we receive a kiss on the cheek from our princess! We all like to receive kisses from our respective best girl friend. I think the rest of the boys are in love just like me. I am sure Finn is. All he does is think of Annie and his green eyes glisten when he sees her. So yesterday I decided to ask him of he likes Annie and he said yes after forcing me to tell him that I love Katniss. Cato and Marvel are a little more discrete with their feelings but I notice that Cato is always smiling when he sees Clove and Marvel gets nervous around Glimmer.

I just saved Katniss and she is hugging me while leaning to kiss my cheek. Just when her lips place a kiss in my cheek someone enters and says "Lets go Katniss." in a worried and angry tone. Suddenly Katniss´s lips leave my cheek and she seems disappointed. "Bye Peeta. Happy birthday. Love you." she says hugging me and pouting. I get what is happening now and start to feel disappointed because she has to leave. I hug her tighter not wanting her to leave just like that. I feel like she is being taken away from me! I can´t do anything else but nuzzle to her hair and mumble "Bye Kat. Love you too." I just wish you could love me in the same way I do. I think to myself. She says goodbye to the other guys and they reply to her while I am trapped in my thoughts. Is her father angry because he thinks I am going to hurt her just after seeing that she kissed my cheek? Does he hate me? Did I just lost all my chances to date her in the future?

"Peeta?" Finnick says to me just after Katniss leaves through the door. "Earth calling Peeta." he continues and I am automatically awoke from my daydream. I instantly feel guilty "What if her father is now angry?" I say to Finnick. "Don't you worry. I am sure he isn´t angry. I mean it was only a hug and a kiss on the cheek" Finnick says being the good friend he always is. He is my best guy friend. He is like a brother to me. We care for each other and never leave each other down. "Thanks I really needed to hear that." I say.

"Peeta come here. Homes can come at any second" Will says coming in. "Okay. See you tomorrow guys!" I say taking my gifts with me kinda relieved because I actually feel guilty now just not as much as before. "See you Peeta. Happy birthday." they say.

"Birthday boy, why were you in that class instead of outside?" Will asks. "Katniss made me a surprise party with the help of Finnick, Annie, Cato, Clove, Glimmer, and Marvel. The problem is that her father came in while we were playing and she was giving me a kiss on the cheek and he seemed angry and worried. I love her and don't want her to be hurt" I say feeling the guilt once again. "Oh Peeta I think is time for you to know a small problem our family have." he says sounding unsure. He goes to Josh and whisper something. After that he just nods and they start what seems a story.

"Years ago... like when our great great great granduncle, John Mellark was a young lad he fell in love with a young girl. Her name was Lily Everdeen. The problem started when John invited Lily to a date and she said yes. Lily knew John was a player but she thought she could change him. Lily after some dates fell in love too. After about three years of dating John proposed to Lily and she, thinking she had finally changed him, accepted. The Everdeen family was happy with the marriage since Lily got a wealthy husband that loved her, cherished her, and that was capable of giving her a nice life which she never had. Why you may ask? The answer is: Because they were a poor family but the Mellark family being filled with spoiled brats thought that the union was just to get money. Even with his mother nagging to call out the wedding, John married Lily. After 6 months, everything went down the hill. Lily started feeling very depressed and people were asking them what was the cause since Lily was the type of girl who was always smiling and never cried. John seemed oblivious to this fact which made the Everdeens really angry. A year passed by and she got even more depressed. One day she went to her sister, Samantha´s house and told her everything that made her so depressed. She told her that once she and John married he stopped being romantic and caring. He was never at home and sometimes he returned at 1:00 am in the morning. She cried in Sam's shoulder for the rest of the day.  Sam took her home and they saw something that made Lily do something horrible to herself. What Lily saw was John kissing another girl. This girl was Caroline Snow. What did Lily do to herself? Well, she ran into the woods, and since she was heart broken she decided that death was better than pain. So that is what she did. She wrote a letter saying what was she doing, where will she be, and why was she doing it and send it to her parents. Afterwards, she took a rope and hanged herself. The day after Lily´s death his parents got the letter and they cried over the lost of their little princess. The Everdeens grieved for  5 days after finding her body with a letter to John in her pocket. This grief was soon replaced for anger towards the boy who seemed perfect for her and they decided to go to John's house. They screamed at him how this was all his fault and how much they hate him and threw him the letter on his face. He read it and started to cry. It said  how much she loved him and how she preferred death rather than the pain of living without him. She wrote something that called his attention "Are you, are you coming to the tree?" a line from a very old song called "The Hanging Tree" This made John feel guilty and decided that he didn't deserved to live. So he did the same that Lily did. He wrote a letter too. There, he wrote what the letter Lily wrote said, how he didn´t deserve to live after doing what he did, and that he was going to the tree. Finally, he hung himself in the same place Lily hanged herself just a week ago." Josh said with an ashamed look an his face.

"The Everdeens started hating the Mellarks cause they blamed John for making Lily commit suicide but the Mellarks said it was Lily´s fault that John killed himself. This hate has been passed from generation to generation but now just seems stupid" Will finishes. "This means you can't love her Peeta. It is too dangerous. Our family won´t forgive them and they won´t forgive us." Josh says looking at me with sad eyes. "You know what I don´t care if her family hate our family. I don't care if this is dangerous but I love her and I will fight for her love. No matter what is our age or our families' relationship. This hate is not right. It goes against God's will and it is pretty stupid in my opinion. Say what ever you want but love her and that won't change." I say getting really angry. I love her and if what comes between us is a family feud then I am fighting for her. We can be the change. We can make a hate that lasted generations disappear.

I look up to my brothers who are just gasping like if they just heard something incredible. I stay there with my brothers for what seems an eternity until Will finally can formulate words. "You seem love her for real." he says a bit in shock. "That´s because I do and even if we are only six year old I can´t help but to think on the possibilities of an us existing in the future. She is just perfect and I am sure I won´t love someone else in my life." I say calmer. 

"You know what little bro, I won't let this stupid conflict stand between you and your happiness." Josh says completely out of his shock. "We are helping you." they say in unison. "First of all, you have to keep your friendship with Katniss secret." Josh says. "Then win her heart. Be a gentleman and care for her but always being yourself." Will continues. "She will develop a crush on you sooner or later and will fall in love afterwards" Josh says. "Ask her out when you are about thirteen years old. By then, she will definitely love you" Will ends.

"Thank you guys. You are the best brothers a boy could ask." I say smiling at the thought of how much my two brothers care for me. We talk for about five more minutes and we hear the voice of Homes call us.

"Hi Homes!" I say. "Hi little fellow!" he says opening the car door for us and putting my gifts in the trunk. We talk about football and school during the ten minute car drive. When we get home, we put away my gifts and Sae serves us grilled chicken for meal. We eat in about fifteen minutes.

After eating we do our homeworks and go outside. There I talk to them for a while about my guilt for what happened at school. They said and I quote "Don't worry. Everything will be okay at the end and if it's not okay then it isn't the end." 

After our conversation we play football and then swim at our pool. "Lets go inside the sun is about to set and we can watch it at your balcony Peeta" Josh says and I smile thinking on the orange color the sky gets during the sunset because is my favorite color. 

We go inside and shower, dress in pyjamas, and go to my balcony. We stay there until the sun disappears and the moon takes its place with the company of the stars. We then go to take our dinner when our father comes inside.

"Hi birthday boy!" he says. I had forgotten that today's still my birthday! Oh well. "Hi dad!" I say excited when I see the box hidden behind him. I remember Katniss doing the same at recess today so I smile even bigger. "What do you have behind your back?" I ask eagerly just as today during recess with Kat. "Oh you got me!" he says chuckling and handing it to me. I unwrap it and see a remote car and helicopter. I give my dad a tight hug and thank him.

We go upstairs and brush our teeth before we all head to my room. I start wondering where my mom is. Maybe she is just in another work trip. Well maybe is for the best. She has been really moody lately and she could ruin my birthday even more than knowing that I should hate Kat has already. I can´t help to feel bad for having to lie about meeting her and about our friendship to my parents but I have to. So I will just go with it. I won´t ruin my birthday. Not after all the effort Kat put on making it the best. Which worked actually. I am pulled out of my thoughts when Josh, Will, and my dad come through the door.

We do our night prayer and then they all say "Goodnight birthday boy!" at the same time. First dad hugs me, then Josh and Will engulf me on a hug and finally my dad joins. We say goodnight yet again and they leave me alone in my room. After ten minutes I can feel myself fall asleep and I dream about my future.
