Car Crash Au

"Shut the fuck up Lance- no one wants to hear about how you dated some peppy high school girl a few years back, Okay?" Keith says while sitting back in the passenger seat of Lance's car. The couple had been fighting all night- or at least for however long they had been in the car. "I'm sorry, I just wanted to take a moment a reminisce the good ol' Days!" Lance yells in response, causing Keith to angrily cross his arms over his chest. "What the fuck is wrong with the present Lance!?" The couple had been driving on this desolate and lonely road surrounded by a lake, only the two of them in the tight space. "Just- shut up Keith!" Lance hadn't noticed, but he began to self consciously step harder and harder on the gas pedal, slowly making the car go faster. "You're being such a baby about this Lance!" Keith yells while uncrossing his arms to bang his right hand on the dashboard for emphasis. "You're the one who started this fucking argument Keith- not me!" Lance says back while turning the steering wheel sharply. Keith collided with the side of the car and hissed from the pain. "You asshole! Learn how to drive a damn car- you're going to get us killed!" He yells while rubbing his shoulder. Lance takes another sharp turn causes Keith to ram into the brunettes side. "What the fuck Keith-" Lance says with an aggravated tone, clearly believing that Keith did that on purpose. "That was your fault!" Keith yells back. Before Lance can say anything else Keith's phone begins to ring. He picks it up without Lance being to read the contact, but he doesn't need to know that it's Keith's father who's calling him; because Keith never misses a phone call from his father. Lance listens in on whatever Keith says to his dad, only glimpsing away from the road one to see Keith's scratches and bruises  from his rolled up sleeves. Keith hangs up the phone and mumbles, "Lance can you drive me home?" The brunette's grip on the wheel tightens as the anger begins to build up. "I'm not bringing you home to that scumbag Keith, you can stay at my place tonight." He says while the shorter male tries to keep the tears back. "Please Lance." Keith whispers. "You're almost nineteen Keith, you should be able to leave him- have you even seen yourself in the mirror? You're always wearing long sleeves and jeans to hide your scars. Your dad makes me fucking sick!" Lance yells while stepping on the gas even more. "I don't know what you're talking about- I just- please take me home." Keith says while Lance grows even angrier. "I'm not taking you home Keith!" Lance yells which causes Keith to finally scream, "I'm going home and that's final-" it was at that point in the night when everything went quiet. The crickets could be heard, their repetitive chirping sound echoing through the couples ears. Lance missed the turn, or maybe it was Keith who forgot to pay attention to the road; but the two were now tumbling down a hill heading straight into the cold lake. It was now too late, too late for Keith to tell Lance that he was right, and too late for Lance to tell Keith that he loved him. All of the things that followed happened like a song was being played, every verse symbolizing something else. First, Lance had a head on collision with the steering wheel before the airbags deployed. Then the car hit the water and Lance's legs were lodged underneath the steering column. Keith on the other hand was still conscious and screaming when they finally hit the lake. He watched as water began to fill the car from the slightly cracked open windows. Keith took deep breaths, feeling as though the walls were closing in. The water kept filling up the car while Keith began to fumble around with the seat buckle. Once he finally was able to get out of the seat he glanced over at Lance who's blood was contaminating the water. Keith took a deep breath of air from whatever oxygen was left and attempted to save Lance. He pulled and tugged at his limp body, hoping that it would work. That he would be able to hold him again. But Keith needed to breathe, so he swam to the surface- then he looked back down and there was only a dark abyss. The car was out of sight, and so was the man he loved more than life. Keith slowly swam to the sand and soil filled wasteland that surrounded the lake and climbed up the hill; tears streaming from his eyes, blood and pain coming from every inch of his body. He went into the street and began yelling out as loud as he could, looking back at the lake every few seconds to see if Lance would show up; though by the time a car did drive by- Lance never appeared. Keith told them what had happened to the best of his ability, then- he blacked out.

Keith woke up in a bright white room, for a second he thought he had died- that it was his time to pass on. But, not this time. It wasn't him who died, but the person he loved. Then someone entered the room, that was when Keith realized that he wasn't dead- that he was just in the hospital. Recovering. He looked over to his right and saw an empty bed, somewhere deep down hoping that Lance would be there. "Mr. Kogane, it's good to see that you're awake." The Lady said with a tone that was somehow soothing to Keith. He tried to sit up, but felt an excruciating pain erupt from his chest and stomach- and arm. "Oh no don't move- the doctor wouldn't want that." She says while rushing to his side. Keith glances over to his left arm, and notices that it's wrapped up in a semi white blue bandage covering the heavy duty materials. Blue was Lance's favorite color. Blue also symbolized water, and rebirth- something Keith would never attain. "Mr. Kogane?" The nurse asks as Keith zones back into reality. "Do you think it's alright if I call the doctor in? I don't want you to be overwhelmed." Keith slowly nods, trying to avoid feeling the excruciating pain again. The nurse leaves and everything goes quiet once more. Then a gush of wind sends the hospital curtains flying. Keith shivers and closes his eyes. A few minutes later the doctor arrives and he begins to tell Keith what happened. He tells him that he has a few fractured ribs, and that his arm is in that same state. He also told him that Lance didn't make it. But then he covered that up by saying that Keith was lucky to be alive, which wasn't true. He felt like shit, he felt like dying- but for real this time. He wanted to take out everything that was being injected into him to hear that infamous beeping sound. He just wanted to be with Lance. He wanted to fucking apologize for all of the shit he pulled. Two more people entered the room, taking Keith away from the emotional pain he was feeling. It was his sister Katie and her boyfriend Hunk. Katie was holding a bouquet of flowers in her shaky hands, and tears were flowing down her cheeks. "Ohh you motherfucker!" She cried, running over to Keith. The doctor stopped her before she hugged Keith, so she smiled instead and wiped away her tears. Hunk followed right after, hugging Katie tightly. Keith felt mute at that moment, watching Hunk hold Katie like she was his world. Just like Lance was his world. He felt tears swelling in his eyes as he returned the smile to Katie with his own. The doctor explained Keith's condition to Katie, the short male watching it all from down below. At least that's what it felt like, being weighed down to hell because of what he did. He killed Lance, he could've saved his sorry ass- but he wasn't strong enough. "Your boyfriend, Lance was it? Him dying wasn't your fault Keith." Katie says with the same smile from before. "Pidge it's not that simple- we were fighting, and- and dad called, then Lance told me to stay the night with him, but I told him no-" Katie takes a seat at the edge of Keith's hospital bed, she brushes the hair from his face while continuing to smile. "I know that dad abuses you Keith, he abused me too. Then I turned eighteen and got the fuck out of there. But it was scary, so I don't blame you for telling Lance to bring you home. Though Keith this certainly is not your fault. This is no ones fault." Hunk takes a step closer, "Bud, I was in a similar situation once. I got into a car crash with my best friend Shirogane. Damn he was amazing. I always look back and ask myself why he had to die, and why I had to live? But right now the real answer is that Shiro would've wanted me to live and prosper- same thing with Lance." Katie glances over at Hunk with a sympathetic look, to which Hunk responds with a smile. It was at that moment Keith watched the window curtains move in sync with the wind. That's when he felt some relief, relief that Lance is up above right now forgiving him and all of the pain he had caused him. For once since the car crash, Keith felt Lance's presence, his warm arms wrapped around his ghost like weak body. It was the best feeling in the world.
