i've known death
but it never
affected me very closely
and i tried not to think
about how every death
is something
a daughter or son
often a parent
or a sibling
i knew it,
but it was easier
not thinking
this summer
three boys got drunk
and two jumped off
a bridge
one died
his brother is in my class
and he had to start school
a couple weeks after
his brother died
every death means something
how would you feel
if you were in that situation
what if your son
or brother
or friend
or simply someone
you had borrowed
a pencil from
and never got a chance
to give it back
died?
every death means
s o m e t h i n g,
but we tend to
forget about it
when it doesn't involve us.
we can be so
