Chapter 5
Gerald slowly opened his eyes. He felt so tired and weak. His mouth was dry and there was pain all over. He tried to move his fingers first and felt relieved to feel that it was obeying him. He tried to wiggle his toes and after a long while, move his leg.
He looked up and found himself in a white room. There were tubes attached to his arm and some sort of wires on his chest. Those on his chest were connected to a devise that had numbers and waves on the screen, while those on his arm were connected to plastic tubes and containers on his left side.
He gradually turned his head to his right and saw a woman sleeping on the chair beside his bed, her head resting on the area of the bed near his hand. She looked achingly familiar....
Sarah!
Gerald felt a knot form on his throat but he couldn’t hold back.
She was here beside him!
Trying to recall the events leading to the accident was difficult.
Ang naaalala lang niya, umalis siyang upset when he tried to talk to Jessy about why things are not working out with them. Nasa Draft Pub sila nung time na ‘yon with some friends. He never planned things to end up that way but he had the opportunity that night.
After dinner and some drinks, their group said their goodbyes and he walked Jessy towards her car. She was trying to hold his hand but he was uncomfortable and made excuses not to hold her.
He tried to let her grow on him. For 2 damn years. Because everyone thought, bagay sila. Lahat sinasabi, they were right for each other. Pero deep down, he knew something was missing....
Someone took a piece of him and he was never whole again.
And he can never love anyone until he takes that piece back. \
The events were blurry to him now but there were harsh words. She called him a user, he told her she was selfish. She threatened to destroy him sa press and sa fans, and madamay na daw lahat pati family niya. That was when he got angry and told her he never loved her, not one bit.
And then he walked out on her. He went back to the pub, drank a couple more beers and sat in the back of the pub (to have some privacy) fuming mad over how he allowed his life to get this complicated.
He drove off and decided to take the longer route from Taguig to Quezon City, passing by back roads.
He must’ve been driving for hours and felt sleepy...
Bright lights, car swerving, truck approaching......
Gerald tried to speak but no words seemed to come out of her mouth.
Gently, he touched her hair and with the back of her fingers, caressed her cheeks.
Sarah...
Sarah felt a warm sensation on her cheeks and slowly opened her eyes. Their eyes met. Each brimming with tears.
“Gerald? Akala ko, wala ka na...” As tears fell down her cheeks. “Ano ba ‘to? Sorry ha? Nakita ko kasi kanina. Sobrang dami ng blood. I really thought... I can’t believe it was you. Kumusta ka na?”
“ Sarah, I missed you so so much”
“I’m so sorry Gerald, I’m so sorry”, Sarah said while sobbing.
