Chapter 30

    I hope King took what I said serious. I have enough on my plate as it is now. The last thing I need is, another close death. We have to find this killer before the next body is found. I know I need to talk to Chance before he gets issued a warrant. He might not ever forever me if I don't warn him. I need to talk to Chance and my mom right away. Seeing how these deaths becoming close and closer to home, I need to let them know what's going on. They know a little bit, but they don't know the full details. I texted my mom and told her to come over. The sooner I talk to them, the sooner I can protect them. They all I have left and im not trying to lose them. I rushed home as fast as I could, hoping Chance is there. I tried calling him, but he didn't answer. All I could imagine was him sitting in an interrogation room right now. This might be the hardest conversation, next to telling him I cheated.

Baby, I need to talk to you. What's wrong? You know this X case I've been working on. Yeah, what about it? I just found out you're being looked at as a possible suspect. WHAT! Blake told me that Smith had been working off the books for a while now. Every since we got Braxton's case. He felt like something was going on between Braxton and I considering the fact, Braxton didn't want to talk to nobody but me. What that has to do with me? I'm getting to that. Every since then, Smith been having us watched. The murders that were out of town happened around the time you were out of town. Every time you went out of town, a murder happened. I only went out of town twice. And bodies were found them 2 times. I still don't get how that makes me a suspect. In this line of work, that raising a huge red flag baby. If Smith keeps pushing this, he could issue a warrant for you to have you questioned. That's crazy, Chance said. I just wanted to let you know before it gets to that point. You're the Captain, how can anything go above your head? I still have to answer to people just like people have to answer to me. Smith can go to those people that I have to answer to and it will be out of my hands at that point. The fact im the Captain and you're my husband, I wouldn't be allowed near this case. There is no case, I haven't done anything. I know baby, I just want you to be aware of what's going on.

My mom finally made it. What's so important I had to come over? I need to talk to both of y'all. What's going on? This X killer is really after me. You still on this? Yes, this is very serious. There were 7 people killed, people I knew. The last 2 were people were actually close to me at some point. 2, my mom said? I didn't tell you, Talen was killed too. Y'all friend Talen? Yes, he was found yesterday morning. LORD! I'm telling y'all this because I don't want y'all to be next. Don't think like that, Chance said. I can't help but think like that. It's 3 more people on the list. For all I know, we could be them 3. I need y'all to go far away. You out your mind if you think im leaving you here, Chance said. Chance is right, you not staying here alone. I don't want nothing happening to y'all. If im the person the killer is after, I rather stand alone. I can't let y'all sacrifice y'all lives trying to protect me. I don't care what you say, im not going nowhere without you. I'm not going nowhere either, my mom said. Y'all are making this so difficult. So, you not about to make us leave you here alone. All you can do is, find this killer before the next person is scratched off the list. I'm doing the best I can, it's not easy. Of course it's not going to be easy. What killer is going to make finding them easy? A dumb one, my mom said. Well, it's clear this killer far from dumb. I was annoyed that they weren't taking me serious. I just got up and left.

I texted Blake and told him to grab all the evidence from all the cases and meet me at lunch. Seeing how Smith working off the books, we about to the same. We need to get a few steps ahead of him if we going to find this killer first. Somehow, we need to get close to finding a killer before my husband ends up getting arrested. I got everything, Blake said while sitting down. We have to find something, and we have to fast. I'm with you, let's get started. It has to be something we're missing. Let's go over what we know so far, Blake said. We know im the link to all these murders. The penmanship was different on 2 cases, possibly means 2 different killers. Check this out, Blake said while pointing to the photos. Everybody was killed the exact same way. Same spot, same weapon, all of that. The only thing that's different is with Talen's death. If you noticed everybody else placement was the same. Talen was stabbed and shot. He was stabbed in the same spot as everybody else, but he was also shot. Everybody else was only stabbed multiple times. Why would they shoot him? Guess they wanted to make sure he was dead. Wait, I said while looking closer at the photos. There are no bullet shells at all. Whoever did this, knew to get the shells before leaving. There goes our clue, I said. If a bullet was found, we could have at least found out what kind of gun it was. The killer must have noticed the bullet went straight through, Blake said. So, the killer stayed around long enough to notice that, and get the bullet. Does Chance have a gun? Yeah, but it's locked away. That's not enough to eliminate him as a suspect. He was out of town when some of the bodies were found, and he has gun. That information alone is enough to have him questioned. You know IF, not saying he is but IF he's the killer; you could go down too. Not if I knew nothing about it. Plus, I know he didn't do nothing. I know, im just saying. We have to find some kind of way to clear his name. That's kind of hard to do, Blake said. If anybody knows you cheated with the last 2 victims, that gives Chance a real motive. That's how any judge would like it. Nobody knows I cheated. That's the only thing I can possibly think of that will makes all of this make sense. You sure you haven't slipped up and said something, he hasn't found any text messages, none of that? No, not that I know of. If he knew I cheated, he would have said something. Or, he could have kept it in and just killed the people you cheated with. It sounds like you trying to make him the killer. No, that's not what im doing. I'm trying to get you to see that this is how a judge or anybody that doesn't know you like do is going to look at this case. If Smith knew you cheated, 2 people you cheated with were killed, you bets to believe he going to really pin that on Chance. Blake has a great point. Either way around it, it's not looking too good for my husband.
