“Is it true?” Jason asks, “He’s actually… he’s…”
Mitch nods, a crestfallen expression forming on his face.
“What are we gonna do?” Jerome asks, “The fans are going to have to find out sooner or later…”
“They already know.” Azalea says, “Word like that gets out very quickly.”
“That’s true.” Jason replies, “I just still can’t believe it…”
No-one says anything to break the prolonged silence hanging above them. The rest of the house was soundless, soundless because it was empty. Most of the Team had returned to their homes years ago, only occasionally returning during holidays. Jason and Jerome were the only ones who stayed most of the time, but even they were with their families for the rest of the year. For the most part of the year, this house stayed still.
“He was part of my life…” Jason says, “Nobody made me happier than him.”
“I can’t even imagine what Ty is going through right now.” Jerome utters.
“What did you say, Mitch?” Jason asks, “A fatal…”
“Car accident.” Mitch finishes.
Jason looks down; suddenly his feet were very interesting.
“Died instantly.” Azalea mumbles. She blinks, letting the salty tears drip down her face.
Mitch wraps an arm around her shoulders and pulls Azalea in. She leans her head on Mitch, wiping the tears from her eyes with her sleeves, sniffling quietly.
“So what do you want us to do?” Mitch asks, “You want us to stay awhile?”
“If it’s not too much for you,” Jason answers, “can you please?”
Mitch nods, “That’s okay. Unless, Aza, you want to go home?”
Azalea shakes her head, “It’s okay. We can stay.”
Jerome manages a little smile and looks up at Mitch, but the smile soon disappears.
Azalea inhales shakily, “I’m going to miss him.”
“We all are.” Mitch replies, “He was a good guy, always made us smile, his jokes never got old.”
Jason smiles to himself, remembering an old memory.
Jerome buries his head in his hands, “Why did this have to happen? He was too young… it’s just not right.”
Azalea’s hand crawls its way into Mitch’s, discreetly hinting that she didn’t want to be here anymore. Mitch knew what it meant, even if no-one else did.
“Well…” Mitch looks around at everyone, “Jerome, Jason.” He nods at them, “We’ll see you later.”
***
Mitch stands in the doorway, watching Azalea as she silently reads a book in bed. It was getting pretty late.
“So err… wanna talk?” Mitch asks.
Azalea shakes her head, “I’m not in the mood.”
“That’s okay.” Mitch replies, “I’m not really either. I just still can’t believe what’s happened.”
A teardrop falls onto one of the pages of Azalea’s book. It soaks in, penetrating the pages below and smudges the printing. Azalea closes the book and places it on the bedside table; she looks up at Mitch and beckons him to lie next to her, patting the empty space next to her.
He smiles and joins her, wrapping an arm around her.
“It’s just… letting it sink in… coming to face the facts… I just can’t do it, I-”
“Shh…” Azalea shifts herself, resting her head on Mitch’s chest, “Let’s just lay here.”
“I just can’t believe he’s gone… he was such a big part of everybody’s lives…”
“Shh…” Azalea repeats, placing an arm over his stomach, “Nothing needs to be said.”
“Alright.” Mitch whispers, running his fingers through Azalea’s hair.
She closes her eyes, exhaling shakily. Mitch often found himself like this, acting as a pillow for Azalea as she lay there and often fell asleep, often by accident. The sense of security he gave her relaxed her more than anything else in the world.
“Aza?” Mitch whispers.
She doesn’t respond.
“Aza… I’m going to have to get up.” Mitch says.
Azalea still doesn’t reply.
“Wow… you’re really out of it this time.” He comments.
Jerome laughs quietly as he watches from outside the door.
Mitch spreads out his free arm in a ‘what do I do now?’ gesture.
“Dude…” Jerome chuckles, “She’s wasted.”
“Look at her.” Mitch says quietly, “She might as well be dead.”
Jerome laughs, “She’s your problem, not mine.”
“Thanks for reminding me.” Mitch replies.
