“I don’t think this house is being used.” A small boy from the village says and shows everyone in. The house was relatively large, with two rooms and an attic.
“Out of my way!” I command, “Dying girl coming through!” I rush up the stairs carrying Scarlet who was weakening by the second as she lost more amounts of precious blood.
I carefully place Scarlet on the bed, making sure she was comfortable and I take her hand as I hope and pray that she’ll be alright.
But her state wasn’t improving.
“Scarlet…?” I whisper.
She wasn’t moving, in fact, she hadn’t been moving for a while. Not since I took her from Mitch. Her face was whitening, and her hand was becoming colder as I held it. I shake my head slowly, “No… no… Scarlet!” I beg, “Stay with me!”
I desperately search through my inventory, trying to find some sort of healing potion. But I had none. I hadn’t had the time to brew much else other than water breathing potions.
I look back up at Scarlet, her face ever paling, “I’m gonna get help.” I say my thoughts aloud. Getting up to leave, I’ve almost lost all hope – what could anyone possibly do to save her now?
But then I heard a small, raspy voice.
“S-Seto…”
I turn around and look at Scarlet once more, “Scarlet?” Her eyes were only barely open, but I could see she was alive. I rush over to her side, “What happened?” I ask frantically.
“Squids… ambush…” she forces out weakly.
“St-stay here. I’m gonna get help!” I rush off down stairs and grab Jason’s arm.
“What the-”
I cut him off, “You’ve got to help Scarlet!”
Jason hesitates, “A-alright. B-but I don’t know whether I can.”
“You have to! Come on!” I reply in a panicky tone, tugging on his arm.
Jason gives in and follows me to the attic where I left Scarlet last. She was still in the bed completely motionless.
“Can you do anything?” I ask.
“I’m not sure. I’ll try but I’m not guaranteeing anything.” Jason replies as he walks over to her. He holds his hands out over Scarlet and they begin to glow a bright lilac colour as he begins to heal her.
I stand a few blocks away, watching in anticipation and concern. This couldn’t be it, could it? Scarlet couldn’t be… gone.
After a few minutes Jason stops, beginning to lose his balance. I watch as he collapses to the floor in pure exhaustion. I hope he’s okay.
But it was Scarlet I was more concerned about. I rush over to her side and study her face. Her wounds were gone, but her skin colour hadn’t improved.
I kneel down, my vision blurring as I saw it was all too late, “Sc-Scarlet…”
Her sleeping face didn’t respond.
“Scarlet… I… ever since I first met you, I’ve never wanted to leave your side. You’ve always been so kind and caring, always so willing to help us. And when I had to leave, all those years ago, I wasn’t just leaving this beautiful kingdom with all its rolling hills and shimmering lakes, I was leaving something much more striking – I was leaving you.” I lean in a little closer and whisper into her ear, “I guess what I’m saying is… I love you.” I press my lips on her forehead, a tear tumbling down my cheek.
I come away from Scarlet as I hear Jason starting to stir, “S-Seto… did it work?” he asks slowly, rubbing his head.
I turn to him and shake my head bleakly.
Jason lowers his head in shame, “Seto… I… I tried, I really did.”
“I know you did, and I’m not blaming you for this.” I reply softly.
“Then who do we blame?” Jason asks.
“The squids.” I answer, “I managed to find out she was attacked by squids.”
